Does anyone know of some atmospheric, yet unnoticeable, dungeon-raiding type music, possibly with dripping in the background, that would be suitable to play at a dnd session? Preferably some that can be downloaded free from the internet? Thanks.

Seems like all the recent RPG video games have pretty nice music these days… Try finding a few of those MP3's and see if you like them?

Yeah i considered that but i thought someone has surely made something appropriate as that idea didnt appeal to me for some reason.

Mortiis is an excellent choice. Especially the albums Keiser av en Dimensjon Ukjent and Crypt of the Wizard. Crypt of the Wizard is the most D&D'ish out of these. It is a sort of moody darkwave rpg music.

No lyrics in Mortiis's songs. Except for his latest album, Grudge, but that one sucks anyway.

The background music from the PC game "Daggerfall" is on the net, and much of it should be appropriate, if not ideal.

All of the background music from Diablo II is (or at least used to be) available for download from Blixzard's site.

The soundtrack for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night should provide excellent dungeon and combat music. The OST for Xenogears should provide excellent background music for many different envirements. I advise finding obscure stuff that your players may not know, it may actually get in the way to hear something they know faintly in the background.

How about the "Official Dungeons and Dragons Soundtrack" by Midnight Syndicate?

I'd vote for that one as it makes great background music. ;)

We had a house rule for one campaign that every combat must be accompanied by music from Gladiator, but that's just us.

Please note that all songs in Gladiator are waltzes.

The CRPG Divine Divinity (http://www.larian.com/Site/english/divinity/divinity.html), in addition to being a fantastic game, has probably the best soundtrack I've ever heard. Stirring and evocative, yet just unobtrusive enough not to draw attention away from the game, I feel it would make the perfect backdrop to a gaming session. Several tracks are available for download from the publisher's website (http://www.larian.com/Site/english/divinity/music.html) and there's a freeware program floating around on the net somewhere to extract all of the music files from the game. (The game itself is great, and since it's been out for a couple years it's a steal at $20 for a bundle of both Divine Divinity and its sequel, Beyond Divinity.)

No harm done, I just found it funny that every single piece of music in an action movie was played in 3/4.

The Eberron Soundtrack is pretty good. Theres a Cure Remixes CD out there thats just instrumentals and it sounds like what drow wizards prepare spells to. At least to me it does, its really great creepy music. And the Final Fantasy the Movie Soundtrack isn't bad either.

I think medieavel music is always fine.

Here's my list of music I play during the gaming sessions. There are some German bands, but I think, that won't matter since they make good atmospheric background music.

cornix maledictum
Dead can Dance
Corvus Corax
Empyrium
Faith and the Muse
Faun
Des geyers schwarzer haufen
Veitzfluch
Mila Mar
Weltenbrand
Schandmaul
Adaro
Aghas
The 3rd and the Mortal
Midnight Syndicate (D&D Soundtrack)
And of course Soundtracks from PC-Games

Indeed, it is hard to imagine a metal background music working well in a village square scene, or in a diplomatic situation.
