Attention female gamers-research help [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-21-05, 10:40 AM I am looking for female D&D palyers who would like to participate in a Anthropology research I'm doing. I'm a student a UIC-Chicago and I'm doing an Ethnograghy paper on female gamers. Eventhough I've been palying D&D since 1983(old school 1st ed.!) I can't use myself in my paper. I'm looking for your experances as a female gamer.how and why you got involved in D&D ect.In other words I would like to hear your story. All questions and responces will be by e-mail. No personal questions will be asked. Any help will be very much appreciated. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have.

11-29-05, 11:06 PM Well, seeing as this is academic paper, I don't think the flood-gates are open. if I'm right, the research that isn't allowed to happen on the boards falls into the market research category, right? Totally understandable, since this is, you know, Wizards site. However, if I was doing a paper for my lit class on the favorite campaign settings of role-players, I think they might let me inform people of this and let them contact me.

I might be talking out my back-end, though.

"Hey, I'm doing a paper on how many female gamers play, and why."

and

"We are interested in creating a gaming suppliment for female gamers, but we need to know how many females actually play, and what they like about the game so that we can focus our efforts."

other than how it is presented? Same question, same answers, same usefulness. Heck, a company wouldn't even be technically lying with the first one, as long as the "paper" is a market study report, and not just a simple college paper.

I just bring this up because I support the idea of blanket bans on objectionable material for the ease of moderation. It makes it less of "Why did you close my thread when you let this one thats just like it stay open? and more of a "We just don't allow that sort of thing at all, sorry". One looks like individuals are being singled out, the other looks like everybody is being treated equally (equally bad, but still).

In general, where do you get permission to do things that might violate the Code of Conduct. Well, the two that would need to be requested would be WizO_Paradox (RPG Boards Lead) and WotC_Mel ("Head Honcho over the Boards"). Keep in mind that there are going to be certain things that they will approve (ie. threads like this, the creation of the Guild Hall and the Rec Room where an occasional off-topic post is acceptable,etc.) and things that they will not (ie. items that usually lead to flame wars on the boards). In the future, I will do a better job clarifying why certain threads were reopened after being closed or accepted.

But the main thing is that Wizard Community leaders are going to have a little flexibility in the rules when it comes to situations like this. We have rules for general sitautions, but we've all had to do research for papers in the past. Thus, for this item and the permission is requested from the two above, we're not going to apply the thumbscrews just for the sake of the Code of Conduct. If we start to notice an increase in released 3rd party products to the off-board surveys, I'm sure Mel and Paradox will revisit the topic.

At any rate, this discussion is really off-topic for the topic of this thread. If you want to discuss it further, then open a thread on the RPG Board Business board. Let'slet this thread go back on topic.
