I think I heard once about a feat or something called awaken undead (or something similar).

Can someone explain what it does and where it comes from (if it does indeed exist)?

It's a spell in Libris Mortis. It grants mindless undead (skeletons, zombies) intelligence.

I won't post full crunch, as it's not open content..

It does for undead what awaken does for animals and plants.

Awakwen Undead appears in both Libirs Mortis and the Spell Compendium. It allows you to grant mindless Undead mental stats (rolled up, not it's original stats).

Worth noting is the fact that the Libris Mortis version specifically states the creature does not get it's feats back and the Spell Compendium version says the creature gains feats as a normal creature of it's HD. (Which implies that the creature loses any feats that it had in life and gets new ones).
