| NitrosDragon05-30-06, 08:26 PM | Okay, me and a friend are having some serious confusion when it comes to B.A.B. and gaining it. What happens when multiclassing? We can't find anything to in depth about it in the books, maybe we just failed our spot checks. Ex. Here is our problem. We have a diety character with a B.A.B. +43/+38/+33/+28/+23/+18/+13/+8/+3. I know, really tough, but to the point. He gains a B.A.B. from a class he just takes and gains +15/+10/+5. What is the final B.A.B. and why? Thanks for any help, we really appreciate it. |
| Escef05-30-06, 08:30 PM | BAB from multiple classes all stack. So a fighter 4/rogue3 has a BAB of +6/+1. (Not that modifiers from ability scores, magic weapon bonuses, feats, etc. do not count as BAB, and therefore do not count towards granting multiple attacks). It works a little differently after 20th level, see the Epic section in the DMG. |
| Seeker9505-30-06, 09:32 PM | Short answer: Add it up. Your BAB is the sum of the BABs for each individual class in your PC build. |

The maximum number of iterative attacks you gain from a high Base Attack Bonus is 4. So the original character would have +43/+38/+33/+28. Gaining another +15 BAB would give him a Base Attack Bonus of +58, for a full attack option of +58/+53/+48/+43. Note that after you reach 20 HD, instead of gaining a higher Base Attack Bonus, you gain a +1 Epic Attack Bonus every other level instead of whatever the class level would give you. |
| Joe Khol05-31-06, 08:05 AM | In my experience, an important factor in understanding BAB is to remember that BAB is a single number. A level 8 Fighter has a BAB of +8. You can then work out iterative attacks from that (+8/+3). That makes multicalssing easier - you just add the single figures and then deal with iterative attacks from the total BAB. So, the example given becomes a character with BAB +43 gains classes giving BAB +15 ends up with a total BAB of +58. You can then work out the iterative attacks of +58/+53/+48/+43 (to the maximum of four attacks from BAB alone as someone else mentioned). |

It's only character levels, actually. Racial Hit Dice grant BAB normally. Look at the Tarrasque for an example. |

| NitrosDragon06-01-06, 11:29 AM | Thanks EVERYBODY! Me and my confused friend appreciate ALL of the posts. If I had the money I'd send all you guys a sheet of golden star stickers. We finally worked out the problem and figured it all out. If there is a moderator veiwing this, maybe you should, in your report, make a suggestion that Wizards could make a small article on B.A.B. From what I can tell there isn't much mentioned in the books that helped me, so maybe some online litereatue might help. Carpe DM, NitrosDragon |
