| Sinweave05-14-07, 01:10 PM | A quick question: A DM of mine says that Wizards "Official" stance on the 3.0 splat books is come 3.5 the basically ceased to exist as far as they were concerned. I bring this up as I was trying to use a spell from Masters of the Wild that wasn't reprinted in any other source; and figured it wouldn't be a problem as I would suppose there was a backwards compatibility. Any thoughts or suggestions would be nice. Thanks. |
| TheYeti177505-14-07, 01:24 PM | DM's call if he allows it or not. Is it not in the Spell Compendium either? |
| mearrin6905-14-07, 01:42 PM | Yeah, I'd say it's his call. I allowed our cleric to use a couple of spells from one of those older 'pre-complete' books and they've been fine - but I wouldn't have allowed them if they looked too unbalancing. Not sure why they didn't bring the spells forward because they seemed okay to me. M |
| Sinweave05-14-07, 02:06 PM | Yeah, I realize it's the DM's call, that's no problem to me really, he/she can disallow anything as far as I'm concerned. He just said it in such a way that made it seem as though it was WotC's "Official" stance that the splatbooks were no longer useable. Seems bogus to me, but stranger things have happened. |
| Androlphas05-14-07, 02:27 PM | Seems bogus to me too. Ask your DM where the press release for that "official" stance is. True that the "Complete" series of books has replaced the 3.0 splat books, but no Wizards men-in-black will come to get you if you use material form the older books, especially since not all the material has been re-written in other books. So, although your DM has every right to ban material he feels is unfit for his campaign, he's really putting words in other people's mouths by saying it's an "official" stance. Addendum: RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign still used material from the 3.0 splat books after 3.5 was released and before the "Complete" series of books came out. |
| Sinweave05-14-07, 02:34 PM | Yeah, I thought it was pretty fishy as well. Moreover he claims to have called WotC on the phone and talked to reps that give him answers that pertain to game mechanics. Shenanigans imo. |
| DarkRhystar05-14-07, 02:46 PM | AFAIK, any 3.0 material that has not been updated and does not directly conflict with any 3.5 rule changes is usable in 3.5 as is. Out of curiosity, what spell were you trying to use? |
| Man in the Funny Hat05-14-07, 05:27 PM | [QUOTE=DarkRhystar;12394256]AFAIK, any 3.0 material that has not been updated and does not directly conflict with any 3.5 rule changes is usable in 3.5 as is.[QUOTE]What he said. Oh, and it isn't that the 3.0 material is UNUSABLE, it is that it is UNSUPPORTED except those books that they have converted to 3.5. That means that if you choose to use them that's your own concern - as is any difficulties that come up in making things work properly with 3.5 rules. |
| Sinweave05-14-07, 07:19 PM | I was trying to use Featers out of the Masters of the Wild, which to the best of my knowledge has not been updated. He eventually allowed me to use it but apparently disallows all 3.0 splatbooks for the reasons mentioned above. Meh. :( |
