My GM has a bad habit of throwing us players into situations where we need to be saved by NPCs. It's not through lack of player creativity or character ability, it's just that he always puts us into situations where we can't survive without outside intervention. It happens about once a session and usually goes something like this: 1) We're forced into a confrontation with 300 or so enemy vessels. 2) We barely escape with our lives. 3) Some critical system(s) are damaged beyond repair and we're dead in the water, despite our best efforts. 4) His favorite ueber-NPC saves us from halfway across the galaxy with the Force/a robot/some duct tape/etc. My favorite one, though, was when he gave us a lethal puzzle with absolutely no clues as how to solve it. We had nine squares with strange markings and a pedestal with nine slots. Close observation and repeated questioning revealed nothing (no patterns, no indication of meaning, nothing). I found out after the fact that the only possible clues to finding the solution hinged on our characters making absurdly high knowledge checks (on an area he knew no character had). After struggling for a couple real-time hours and killing my character (because incorrectly inserting the tiles called for a DC 30 Fort save or die, again, no possible indication anything like that would happen), he finally turned to one player and pretty much told him that the Force had suddenly allowed him to understand the nature of the puzzle. :weep: Other than things like this, I enjoy the campaign. Anybody else ever have GM problems like this? |

| thinkhard03-20-05, 05:55 PM | double ouch. That definately wanst a fault of you guys not being creative or what not. And that was absolutely retarded of him to do. If i ever wanna trick characters w/ lethal puzzles, i at least make them a 50/50 chance. One time i had this door with a big key hole, a character with 2 keys and this thick gloves. One of the keys got really hot, almost burning through his gloves. So he decided to put that one in the door...as he got closer, the key got hotter....he put it in and turned it....then BAM! dc25 fort save for an explosion of heat coursing through his body....and he died. It was mean, but it was at the end of the session, the guy could easily get resurrected (i had provided such means) and the other characters knew the answer to the puzzle after his mistake :p. They never put hot keys in doors again. |
| Azual03-20-05, 06:43 PM | Well, as a DM, sometimes players act really REALLY stupid (as in oh wait, this key isgetting hotter, it must WANT to go in the keyhole) Anyhoo, puzzles are good, but they must really be solvable. :) |
