| Suzaku45507-16-06, 07:07 PM | Need a bag of miniatures because I'm starting to DM game and I doubt any of my players have miniatures so I'm proably going to be forced to buy some but 12 dollars for 8 minis and you don't know what you're getting is pretty expensive. So I would have to buy bunch of Minis to get a wizard, type, fighter type, barbiran type, rogue type etc, is there a less expensive way? |
| VFults07-16-06, 07:16 PM | Check to see if your local game store opens boosters and sells miniatures singles. If not, I recommend going to eBay for singles. While there are a lot of sellers, I've always had good dealings with Auggest (do a search for sellers and you'll find his eBay store). His Buy It Now prices are fair and he has a reasonable fixed rate for shipping. Regards, V |
| TG_Ambro07-16-06, 08:37 PM | i agree, augest is a very good seller, i am actually going to be buying some new mini's (war of the dragon queen baby!) some time this week. so that is the best way to go. |
| VrecknidjX07-16-06, 09:00 PM | There are a LOT of people who use the boards who have piles of extra minis they'd be more than happy to part with for a little bit over shipping (if you don't mind some less-than-valuable commons). If you can't find minis for a reasonable price from the eBay sellers, check the trading threads and post what you're looking for and what you're willing to pay. Or, email me privately off the boards and let me know what you're after. Dave |
| R2-DS07-16-06, 09:12 PM | If like me you arent a big fan of the pre painted "plastic" types than I would recommend the "reaper" line of Pewter Mini's. They are still in that 25mm scale for the most part and are some of the best I've ever used. I know that here in Canada they run for about $4.00 each. I'm sure they're considerably cheaper in US dollars. They have a really good online store too. Do a google search for Reaper mini's. |

Reaper is your best option...You can see and select what miniatures you want..not take pot luck. look here (http://www.reapermini.com/) for Reaper |
| Yak of Darkness07-17-06, 02:59 AM | So I would have to buy bunch of Minis to get a wizard, type, fighter type, barbiran type, rogue type etc, is there a less expensive way?Yes, there is a less expensive way. Reaper, however (as much as I love them--they make damn good minis and you should totally look them up, if only to ogle the nice sculpts), ain't it. For a quick and cheap poor-man's-bag-o-minis option, turn to your computer and make paper counters. They can range from as simple as a smiley face or text saying "fighter," or as complex as any picture you can find in digital form (my personal preference is to use sprites from the various Final Fantasy games, both people and monsters--a quick net search can get them for you if you're so inclined). Just get the image that you want for whatever PCs, NPCs, or monsters you want (and maybe a few useful "generics," like "man in armor," "wolf," "bandit," etc.). Then, in your image-making program of choice (or even Microsoft Word), use a line/box tool to draw out squares. One-inch squares for small/medium creatures, two-inch squares for the larges, and so on. Import your creature images into the file, resizing them to fit the appropriate squares. Print out the pages, cut along the nice lines, and voila, you can make a couple dozen minis for a net cost (in paper and ink) of what's probably less than a quarter. If you're a big spender looking for extra prettiness, use color ink. ;) You can make/print whatever monsters you want this way, and you can do it by the boatload. Want an army of orcs, with different pictures/colors designating class/rank/whatever? Bam, you've got 'em. Need mobile terrain features that aren't actually combatants (wagons, logs/barrels that can be rolled/used for cover, kobolds)? Done and done. How about an easy way to work out mounted creatures? Lay the "man in armor" counter on top of the "horse" one, and you're in business. They're cheap, relatively easy to make, and crazy-versatile. Not terribly durable, but save the file, and they're easily replaced/duplicated. What's not to love? Barring that, go on eBay, buy five-thousand wrackspawn minis from the Angelfire set (it'll probably cost you about a buck), and just tell your players to pretend they're all goblins. :P |
