I was under the impression that a demon who is summoned with a spell leaves a fraction of its essence on it's home plane, so if it is killed on the material plane, it is merely "sent home". What about if a demon plane shifts the material plane? Then, if he is killed, he's dead for good, right? |

Summoned Creatures, like Astral Travelers, are not really there. When their spell created forms are damaged or destroyed, their real form remains unharmed. Outsiders who travel by plane shift, gate, or other means, may be extraplanar (thus can be banished or dismissed) but otherwise they are really there. When damaged or destroyed, they are really damaged or destroyed. By the fluff in the Fiendish Codices: Extraplanar Outsiders can supposedly only be truely slain on their home planes. This repeats tropes favoured in earlier editions, but is not supported anywhere else in the current rules. |
