| wizard of Newfoundland01-31-08, 02:21 PM | My party always asks me if they can fly up and jump on the back of some flying creature and attack it. I don't know what to do for rules mechanics in this situation. I've had them make ride checks and grapple checks but if they do manage to stay on can the creature attack them? I imagine that you couldn't reach your back if you were a quadruped. Any ideas on rulings for checks for staying on and what the monster can and cannot do to you? |

I'd stick with standard rules (grappling makes sense to me for this) and work out how to describe the fundamental mechanical results in a relevant way for each situation (maybe the monster is rolling around and throwing the PC about enough to reach them or maybe the damage from the monster attacks is actually from the shaking about). |

As far as Ride checks and grapples? Why not make a Ride vs Grapple check? As good as any other solution I suppose. |

DC increase by +2 for every size category it is bigger than you and +2 for every step in the "unfriendly" direction it is towards you. (There are some mounts in Races of Stone that are weird and I think they talk about DC checks for riding crazy stuff in there/) |
