Sorry if this has been posted before, or somewhere else, but i am going to be starting a new Greyhawk Campaign within the next week or so, and I have purchased this module. I was wondering what you thought of it, and where I should place it in Greyhawk. I was thinking somewhere near the Duchy of Urst and the Cairn Hills, but i am not to sure. Any advice and comments are welcome.
Thanks

Sorry to come off half-cocked, but I too am getting ready to run in Greyhawk. My starting point is in NE Nyrond by the Bone March as up to this point the buggers in there haven't done anything for a long time. It could be the Barrow of an Ur-Flan elder or some such. I thought by putting it there the massive amount of humannoids could be the start of the howling horde adventure part also. Just a couple of iron drabs :D

I was also thinking in Nyrond area, but for the most part my campaign will be based in the City of Greyhawk, and the surrounding area. I like your idea though:thumbsup: .
What do you think of this module? Just out of curiosity.

Good Luck with your campaign! Good to see Greyhawk alive and well!
....at least in some peoples hearts

I don't have the module yet so I can't totally respond. I've been of the mind from what I've read that it should be a good module to run. Of course no module for me remains unchanged but like I said in the other post I want to run in that area since it hasn't had alot of attention since 3.x was released and with all the goblinoids just cooling their heels in Bone March I can see a Nyrond torn by need to rebuild, keep KotP off the Northern reaches, Pray no incursions from the Wolf lands, Butress the Eastern border with the Great Kingdom, Kingdom of Ahlissa etc. I just see it as an area that adventurers can begin in and it's still relatively close to Greyhawk that once they get to 6th level or so a trip to the big cities will be in order. Just my thoughts not on the module I know:rolleyes:

I've got it. I'm running it right now. See my recap thread (link in my sig).

It's got a decent story. Pretty fun. Plenty of problems, too, though.

One problem I'm finding is that the monsters all seem to have pretty high ACs (18-22) relative to the difficulty level of the campaign (2nd-4th level adventurers). My players are having a hard time hitting things, and even when they do hit, a number of the enemies have various types of DR, so they're not doing much damage. Two PCs have died in the adventure so far, and we came very close to a TPK in the fight against two varags and a varag zombie (Central Hub).

hey everyone thanks for the input. It is greatly appreciated. I have started making notes, and i will agree, some of the encounters are pretty deadly. It does seem fun and a good story. I look forward to running it.
Thanks once again!

Speaking of deadly encounters, I decided to get rid of the statue encounter completely. I agree with others that the runehound is way too tough for 2nd-3rd level PCs, but rather than replace it with something more reasonable, because of the circumstances, I decided to make the campsite unguarded (I took away the suit of mwk full plate so the PCs wouldn't get any free stuff). This meant that the new PC could join the others without being attacked and having to fight something on his own while the others recovered from their fight with the varags.

The PCs are currently lost in the magic maze. One of them was just killed by fiendish dire weasels summoned by the runes (I rolled confirmed natural 20s for both of them and they did a combined 27 damage, dropping the PC to -14!).

It just goes to show how the randomness of the dice can really effect the outcome of encounters. On paper, the varag encounter doesn't look all that deadly, but because of their high ACs and their free Spring Attack feat (plus Sargus' magic sword and sneak attack ability), it is actually quite lethal.

The fight with Krootad, on the other hand, is meant to be EL6, but my group destroyed his skeletons as soon as he'd animated them and then tripped and killed him before he could really do anything else.

Then crossing the dark caverns turned out to be nearly deadly for two of the PCs who fell off the second platform. That was quite fun - and I made 3D models of the platforms with little bits of twine for the rope and nails for the iron spikes. Check out my recap thread for the photo.

Then the fiendish dire weasels, which are meant to only be EL2, managed to kill one PC thanks to my excellent dice rolling ...

I would agree with Greyhawk City for the simple reason that it is well developed and would allow you to focus on working out how you want to play out the campaign as opposed to developing all the details. However that being said I myself have always wanted to run a game set in Nyrond--one of the most interesting of the human kingdoms in the northern continent, and very interesting neighbors bordering it too...both good and bad.
