Basic game for xmas [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-25-06, 12:00 PM Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I couldn't find a "newbies start here" forum anywhere

To my suprise, I got the Basic Game and the Dummies Guide to D&D for xmas. I am interesting in learning how to play, but I know nobody else who plays D&D. I think my folks kinda thought that since I play a lot of D&D PC games I'd like the Basic Game...

So basically if I learn to play this and get interested in it, how do I find other people to play with? Are there like other forums, clans and stuff?

12-25-06, 12:24 PM Hi and welcome to the boards! I too have no one to play with in my place, but fear not the internet is full of places. I can mention www.enworld.org , www.rpol.net and this board as great places to play DnD pbp (pbp= play-by-post)

As a general suggestion if you like more person to person contact, I would suggest looking through the phone book for more information on your local gaming stores. Some "gamer" people are... odd... by most people's standards. Others not so much. Point being that if don't particularly fit into one gaming group, there are plenty of others out there with different (yet similar) tastes.

After stopping into the gaming store (since you'll be usually blown off by phone) to find when people normally play around the store, pop by again during those times and politely inquire with the person running the game. Assuming that they're not complete jerks and you treat them with politeness and honesty, most tend to take a fond pitty on those starting out (having once been there themselves) and are willing to take you under their wing as you start to figure all of this crazy stuff out.

im new too.. i just have players guide and the monstermanual

is it possible to play online? ... seems resonable as long as you could make an internet program that keeps track of dice rolls...

if this is true ooooo0000OOO i wanna play .... i havnt been able to play yet ive got my char all made out but no one to play with

12-25-06, 08:18 PM What I reccommend is to tell your friends that you got this new gome from your parents for christmas that you want to try out and invite them over for a session. That's what I did. Some liked it, some didn't, but I got myself a small group among my friends.

It's a chat-based program with feature to hold all of your character content and has built in dice rollers. It is immensely useful. I've been using it for a year and a half, and I'm still finding new uses. I swear by it.

some people don't have any friends, don't have any friends that play, or have friends that wish to play, but lack the ability to, due to time restraits, or other issues.

They generally play in chat based programs. It works, but generally not as quickly.

12-26-06, 11:32 AM If you are first learning D&D, the easiest and most fun thing to do (by fare) is to have someone (preferably a friend or family member) teach you by having them be the Dungeon Master. Read through your players handbook, everything except for Chapter 11 (which isn't necessary by any means). Take careful note of Chapter 8.

12-26-06, 11:44 AM OK first, try to get some real people togeather and "kick it old school". That is have a bunch of people over, get some chips, soda, order a pizza, and chill out in your basement while rolling crazy-ass dice and talking in wierd voices. Trust me, it's fun. Real people make the game just that much better.

Now, do you have friends who are into videogame RPGs and such? Anyone into books? Any moviebuffs? These guys are the most likely to play D&D.

As for learning to play, just get the hang of doing skirmishes with goblins and orcs, and have fun mapping out dungeons on graph paper (Just draw a maze, throw some monsters in each room along with some much needed treasure, grab some people to do it and have fun...maby add some traps to keep things interesting). Figure out a story arc you might want to do if you want to, just go from there.

Don't worry about memorizing all the rules beyond the basic combat ones, and just have fun.

P.S. This is almost essential for getting monster stats and such. Just copy and paste the stats for a monster you want into MS word and print it out. That way you can have all the monster stats you need readily availible, and you can take notes on th piece of paper (damage it's take, effects that are on it and how long they last, ect...). If you have any questions on being a dungeon master you can PM me.

Read the game, digest the rules, but you'll need a group...even a buddy or two will do, but find real "in the flesh" people to play some sessions with.

I'm not totally against online play, but do this as a last resort and after you know the game, if you must. Don't let the core of the game slip by into an emotionless computer screen.

There is a WotC meeting forum here somewhere isn't there?

12-28-06, 08:21 PM sorry I didn't come back and reply sooner. I been busy with other stuff. I've not really had time to pick up the D&D stuff just recetly but I'm going to take a look at my local game shop over the weekend.

Unfortunately ExodusGM I live in Manchester, England. Indy is a little bit far for me to come on public transport ;) :)

There is a section for Europe, though it doesn't have a lot of traffic.
Still, you may find a game close enough to you, or you could start a thread indicating that you are looking for players in your area, and something my turn up.
Visiting a local gamestore is also a sound suggestion.

01-01-07, 09:33 AM Cheers for all the help. I think I've got all the d20 stuff sorted out now. I've been mostly practising combat by following the random dungeon tables in the beginners guide that came with the game (1) roll d% for random door and attempt to open in (2) once through door roll d% to find out what's in the room.. etc. It's helped me learn something about the way the d20 system works. All I gotta do now is get my head around character creation and magic. Then I'll find a regular group of gamers so I can learn more, so I'm gonna go check out my local gaming shop on wednesday and see what they suggest. :)
