i recently picked up the dnd basic game and i have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to create a character (it seems that this provided advanced rule book is very unorganized), but i cannot find out how to decide my armor class. ive looked and looked for some base rate decided by my race and class but no. please will anyone help this up and coming find out what i need to do.

and my budget at this time is limited, is there anywhere else other then amazon.com that offers the core books at a slightly used or discounted price.

thank you, Joe

Your AC starts with a base of 10, then you add your Armor Bonus, Shield bonus, Dex bonus, and and other misc. bonus.

Thats about it.

with the basic game you dont make pcs. you choose one of the premade ones. once you start playing AD&D you can make your own pcs.-the basic game is to teach you the basics and learn to have fun in D&D i think

i appreciate the quick reply and was leaning towards a base of 10 because of the glossary's def on the wizards/dnd page but one pre made "eberk"'s ac didnt seem to add up right. and to rbrt, the advanced rule book provides a photo copyable empty player sheet and some basic rules of creation. i plan to continue on to bigger and better but money is tight.

and i forget to add that i am unable to find the initiative as well. this request may seem petty but I may be becoming slightly obsessed.

Get your d20 roll on, Joe

int. is solved by a dex check

you roll 1d20+dex mod+any other mods

the higher gets to take the first actions

it basicly in some games tells your life and death of a pc

IMHO The D&D Basic Box Set is missed named, It would be better marketed as Introduction to D&D. And even then it does a poor job at that. It does not do justice to the earlier Basic Sets. (RANT OFF)

As a newb you are probalby unaware of a document called the SRD. The SRD in a nutshell is the Players Handbook, The Dungons Masters Guide, The Monsters Manuel and Psionic Handbook in an electronic document. IT is FREE to download and use as you see fit in play. The SRD was created so that 3rd party publishers could publish 3.x D&D material using the core rules. And there is a lot of 3rd party material out there as a result.

Here are a couple of Links to the SRD:

Am I the ONLY person that can figure this out who got the Basic set.

Hmm, let's see...we know that the premade characters have an Armor Class of such and such (Take Aramis...he has an Armor Class of 13, or Lidda who has an Armor class of 17). It gives the rules for Armor class minus the 10 number. However, with a little backwards math...for example Aramis has a Dexterity that gives him a +3 AC bonus, and has a 13 Armor Class...hmmm what does that give me.

I thought it was child's play...easily done...even my wife who flunked 3rd grade math and can't figure out THAC0 got it pretty easy...but some things are harder for people than others.

That said...yes, the basic game tells you EVERYTHING you need to make a basic character. In fact they give you just about everything you need to play. The only thing they don't give you are the experience charts, which in my opinion they could have been a tad more generous and given the XP charts up to at least 3rd level or 5th level, however, minus that, the SRD is a great tool for extending out the Basic Game. The Basic Game is a GREAT tool...and with it and the SRD I was able to play 3.5 rather easily until I felt the need to get a bigger 3.5 game along.

I have to admit, in some ways you are probably correct on that mark concerning previous Basic Sets in relation to the current one.
