Looks like Wizards are coming out with a new Basic Set. What do people think?

I think I'll be buying Castles and Crusades when it comes out instead. :smirk:

It is NOT a "Basic" set from the days of old, but an introduction to the current edition.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply it was a rerelease of the Basic Set.

If the new Basic Game contains rules for character creation, adventure creation, and character advancement (which I know it has to level 2, though I hope it goes to at least level 3), then it performs the same function as the old Basic Set. I.E. You can buy the box, go home and play a simplified version of the rules quite happiliy without having to buy another product.

It also appears to have sample adventures, and the original Basic Set did come with a pre-prepared adventure.

The new set has been named after the old Basic Set, so WotC are obviously wanting to associate it with the original Basic rules in some way.

You might be right. But at the same time, they might want to avoid confusing the name with D&D as they did on other "intro" sets.

For example, "First Quest" was the name of another basic intro to D&D, but unless you read the fine print, you wouldn't know you were playing D&D.

Since this is more of a 3e topic (the new basic set being for the current edition...) I'll have one of the WizOs move this to the D&D General board.

According to Gygax's introduction to the original release of the Basic set it too was just an introduction to AD&D (1st ed. having been release just prior).

Actually, the first Basic set was released just prior to the 1e Monster Manual, and almost a full year before the 1e PHB. That's why there are so many rules differences between the original Basic set and AD&D. The references to AD&D were in anticipation of the AD&D books being published.

I'll be picking this up for sure. My question is when it says it will be released in September does that mean early, middle, or late. I would hate to have to wait all the way to the end of the month. If this was the case I might consider picking up this to tide me over http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndcore/863490000

Incidentally, what is the difference between the D&D Adventure Game that was released alongside the original release of 3E, and the D&D Basic Game that is coming out very soon?

The main differences, as I see it:

* 3E rules rather than 3.5E rules
* The Adventure Game had no character generation rules, only pre-generated characters. (The Basic Game has both)
* The Adventure game had cardboard tokens, the Basic game has miniatures
* The Adventure game used a mapsheet (almost identical to the one in the 3.5E DMG), the Basic Game will use four double-sided cardboard mapboards.

There are a other few differences (like the actual adventures!), but I'll have to wait until I actually get the Basic Game to give you more info!

Cheers!
