Back in the dim mists of time - say, around 1987 - Dragon Magazine published a Beastmaster class that was pretty cool. I've since lost the issue, but if memory serves it was more like a feral ranger (NOT a ranger with the Feral template). The class's interaction with animals was amazing, to the point of being able to ride dragons at higher levels (keep in mind, though, that the power levels in AD&D were totally out of kilter as compared to 3.x, and a Level 20 character of any class was very nearly a demigod).

A beast-master would just be a druid or ranger (ideally) that spends a bunch of time dealing with animals, and picks appropriate skills.
