My wife called me into the living room on Thursday night to show me what she had stumbled upon. The show is called Beauty and the Geek on the WB.

You MUST check this out: Beauty and the Geek (http://thewb.warnerbros.com/batg/).

Why? Not just because there are geeks and beauties. But also because of a very specific geek named Karl. When you get to the website, click on the picture of the geek on the bottom right of the screen, where you will be taken to the complete roster. Click on Karl and you'll see why.

Did anyone else see this?

Arrgh! Another stereotype confirmed. "Anyone who plays Dungeons and Dragons MUST be a geek."

While, I must admit that I have known many, many players who confirm to the "geek" stereotype, that is not typical for those I have encountered.

My best friend Travis is a network engineer, married to a beautiful lady, and has three kids. He has been a player in my games for almost fifteen years.

My current group consists of a body builder/ U.S. Marine, And two military intelligence Analyist. All have girlfriends and/ or wives (hotties I might add...lol).

When I was in the Air Force several of the players in my group were pilots!

For myself, I have been married for eighteen years and have two beautiful daughters (both of which I frequently run games for).

My point being is that is is annoying how the mainstream media completely dumps on D&D all the time. Back in the eighties they would put any bible thumping nut who claimed "suicide by D&D" infront of a camers... now its "geeks."

I've watched this show BRIEFLY as is was so stupid as to be embarressing. These guys must be overacting the geek aspect so they can get on TV and get their fifteen minutes... I mean Jeezus! I know Hight School was awkward, but when you get into college the girls are completely different.

My first love was a gamer girl/ hottie I met in college when I was in the Air Force.

My point being I tend not to support anything that dispareges my hobby... this game has brought me years of fun, and great friends and loves that I never would have experienced otherwise. I have seen so-called introverted people come out of their shells around the gaming table... and really blossom into more well rounded individuals.

The game deserves more respect than what is being depicted by this TV show.

End diatribe... you may continue with your regularly scheduled forum topics.

While it is true that not all gamers are geeks, it is true that a rather large percentage of gamers are geeks. I've been to conventions. It is a collection of geeks. The conventions could easily be sponsored by Degree or Arrid Extra-Dry if they are looking for new customers.

D&D is a game very suited to geeks.
That it is suited to non-geeks does not change this.

That said, when it comes to publicity, there is no such thing as bad. The show is going to get lots of mid-twenties watchers who are looking for a reason to laugh at other people. And when the entire fraternity house is watching together, someone in the audience is going to point out that he plays, someone else will ask about it, and another gamer will be born. Some geeks and some not geeks.

D&D is geeky. Deal with it.

It's not that you're not a geek/nerd/wonk, it's that your definitions of these terms are limited and negative. Change that and all is right with the world.

Please do not mistake my diatribe as a denial of my geekness... quite the contrary, I embrace it! :D I have seen the Non-geek set, and believe me... I'd rather be a geek.

That said, I was speaking of the mainstream media's portrayals and or attitude which are disrespectful. While I can deal with the geekness, I won't put up with the disrespect.

I remember one of the reviewers comments from the first D&D movie, "... Why anyone would make a movie based on a dead game only played geeks and losers who live in their parents basements is beyond me..."

While there is no doubt that the movie stank like gamer’s socks at Gen Con, there was certainly no need to be insulting us... D&D players. Take it from this wise “old” sage (I hit the big 4-0 this year…lol :P ) never be “accepting” of someone’s disrespect, especially when it is undeserved… geek or not, because when you do you cross the line from geek to loser. ;)

Dude, if you
A) Know what NewEgg is
B) Have 2 or more t-shirts from Jinx
C) Want to learn Elvish so that you can speak curses at people w/o them knowing.

You are, in fact, a geek

Substitute "Elvish" with "Klingon," "Black Speech," etc.

Oh hey, is there any space left in those games? Also, what books are accepted? I've got this great Sorcerer build I want to playtest, but it draws from the Book of Vile Darkness and Book of Erotic Fantasy.

Hmm, if I were a geek and were on that show I'd be disappointed with my choices. It only seems there are two girls who actually have graduated from college (compared to almost all the guys, and those that haven't are going to within a semester it seems). Anyone else see an education disparity here. Perhaps if somebody matches up it will work out, but with an education gap by that much, what are they going to talk about? Probably be separated within months, and mercy be on them if they get married, even if she's a looker, I hear the closest you can get to hell is to be married to someone you think is an idiot...or someone that is so far above you in education that you can't really understand what they talk about half the time.

Maybe it's just my taste, but relationships are built upon more than looks. Perhaps that's why those "beauties" are there, they are looking for someone successful instead of the usual slobs who either flunk out or don't graduate from college and don't find decent paying jobs. Not that it will work out...but perhaps. They are looking for someone with more substance than just going after the "beauty", though seeing the show I'd wish them good luck. Don't know if they'll find it there or not.

Beauty and brains is nice I admit, but more emphasis probably should be put on brains rather than looks...afterall if you have brains but no looks, if your smart enough odds are that you'll still be successful, but if you have all looks and no brains...well...unless you somehow get very lucky, you'll probably flunk out of school and wish you had more brains in the long run...as everyone's looks eventually die out, but brains last a tad longer.

They aren't going to hook up. That's not the intent. The Beauties are there to teach the Geeks how to be less geeky. And the Geeks are there to get the Beauties to look beneath the surfase.

In their bios, most of the Beauties already have boyfriends, and a few of the Geeks have girlfriends. Any "hook-ups" that happen on the show are outside the producers' expectations.

What the hell is "NewEgg"?

Jinx is a t-shirt website, right?

Cursing at people without them knowing is both cowardly and pointless. I want someone to know full well that I have burned them, even if they are too stupid to know exactly how. Even if you wanted to do something so silly and pointless as to learn a new language to burn someone, why waste your time on a ficitonal one?

...not of age yet.

Yes, you are. That is someone's minor teenage daughters you are slobbering over, man! :nonono:

I have just one question about that site: where are all the beauties? Sure they might actually be nice gals but physically they all look kinda boring and generic, like they are all pressed out of some big focus-grouped "hot" machine somewhere in the midwest.

Eh, that's never stopped me before.

Also, it's ALWAYS someone's daughters you're drooling over. It's like that John Mayer song probably, something about daughters becoming mothers or something. I don't know, his raspy voice sounds like the speech of angels to me. <3

The key word is not "daughter", it is "minor". You may not have a problem with it but the police and the courts do.

Did I mention I own a sword (real), its extremely sharp and well maintained, and I am well versed in its use? Coincedently, I am generally sharpening it when potential BFs show up... Heh, heh :evillaugh

The police would be the LEAST of your worries. I am not opposed to a little surgical alteration to modify your outlook.

I once picked up a girl for a date, only to find her father cleaning his gun. It turned out to be slightly coincidental - he was a cop, and had discharged his gun that day. So it needed cleaned - and he figured he'd do it in plain view of the guy who was picking up his daughter. :)

D&D is geeky, sure...having an imagination is geeky, and slobbering over young girls is..well natural

the word geek gets thrown around everywhere, people try to define it in many ways, even going so far as to try making it an empowering superlative...it never is

we can't 'retake' the word geek any more than women can take back the b-word ...they may try to but they just sound foolish when they do

Funny, but my first instinct would have been to talk to him about the gun. "Hey, is that a '21? How is the Glock action in .45? I'm used to the 9mm action from competition and was thinking of upgrading to a .45. Would you recommend going with a custom 1911?"(Or something along those lines).

I wonder how his reaction would have been...but I'm married now and don't need to worry about such things :)

I wonder how his reaction would have been...Hmm... I would think it not wise to let a police officer know that you are quite proficient with handguns on the first date you have with his daughter. It might earn you just as negative a reputation as announcing that you skipped the previously scheduled first date because of a D&D session conflict. :P

Sup ACLU.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. The ACLU is, as far as I understand, the American Civil Liberites Union, but I don't know whay "SUP" is or how the ACLU would help you. Statutory rape charge is a criminial, not civil, issue.

I was always unaplogetic about my hobbies and interests. It never seemed to be a problem. Maybe it was because I wasn't hiding anything and they thought such "vulnerable" honesty was a good thing. No idea. Didn't matter in the end :)

He's working on a robotic system to track monkeys with lasers!

Robots, monkeys and lasers.

Add ninjas and I think you've got yourself a pretty cool movie.

The real question here is:

Who cares about Beauty and the Geek?

It's a WB teen angst drama, and a reality show over it.

Next we'll be having American Idol threads here.

(And for clarification, I don't care for the preceding shows not because they are 'popular teen shows' but because they are just plain garbage.)

Humbug. If I wanted to deal with reality I wouldn't be playing D&D.
