Beer as a poison? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-27-04, 12:22 PM Okay, stupid question. Is beer considered a poison?

Another player entered a drinking contest and lost horribly because the other side had cheated and cast delay poison on himself so he didn't take any ill effects from the beer... can you really do this? Then someone argued that the monk (who is immune to poison) could also enter the drinking contest without a problem. I've never thought of beer this way.

It springs another question to mind... if beer is a poison, doesn't that make the drunken master prestige class pointless if you're higher than a certain level as a monk? If you're immune to poison, then you can't even be willingly affected by it... so the drunken master could never get drunk?

02-27-04, 01:41 PM No. It has toxicity effects in high concentrations, but it is not a poison. "Alcohol poisoning" is not a reaction to the alcohol itself. It is a reaction to the quantity of alcohol left unprocessed in your system.

(Unless you want to rule almost every food supplement a poison because too much of almost any given ingredient in your system can become toxic.)

02-27-04, 06:22 PM Alcohol is not a "poison", but it can be affected by "poison" spells, so I would say that what happened was "legal" within the rules.
