Then I take max ranks in craft(weaponsmithing). Then i craft and sell 100 daggers. 200-33% ~ 134gold. That's a huge boost for a level one. If you play a long lived race, you could (in theory) continue this for a couple decades, artificially inflating your gold. |
| Seeker9508-07-06, 09:09 AM | You allow this? |
| Bafaap08-07-06, 09:10 AM | Yeah, but usually your part of a team and while you are weak and rich, they are strong and rich. So it's better to kill some monsters and sell the loot than to become a profesional smith. Besides if you sneak into a village, rob and kill the guy that crafts the daggers and then sell then you get the GP and the XP! :fight!: So crafting things is pretty much a wast of time. |
| runestar08-07-06, 09:20 AM | There's a reason why people adventure - it's so they can gain lvs and become powerful enough to just take what they want. Such as all those gold said blacksmith has been amassing with his dagger franchise... ;) Didn't Scott Adams warn us to watch out against all those old people practicing taichi in the parks? They are really shaping up to rob us of all our savings when we become too old and feeble to defend overselves. :D |
| Stumm_Dolch08-07-06, 09:25 AM | It first takes alot of money to set up a network large enough to sell alot of daggers into without flooding your local market. You come up with a business proposal including an itemized invoice of all your equipment (Forge, shop, tools, raw materials... etc.) If it makes sense and sounds reasonable I'll let you'r 1st level character get away with it sure. Now, give me 100 craft checks. Now find a buyer for 100 daggers. |

How much time does it take to craft all this? What does your character eat during this time? Where does he live? Does he pay some taxes? What about weekly donation to his deity's temple? Flowers to his girlfriend? Crafting items to get a reduce cost in your starting stuff is ok. Beside that, there's game time to make profit. |
| LCD2YOU08-07-06, 12:06 PM | There was a thread about 2 months ago that dealt with this. My opinion was "NO WAY". Here's the kicker: How much for a good quality forge? You know one that would be able to make quality daggers to prevent some irate 4th level fighter coming back and shoving what's left of the dagger up the PC's..... Remember, there's no credit back then. The player needs to buy the forge, set up the shop, etc. Let's not forget taxes, robbery, etc. What about working for someone? Well, I doubt if the master of the shop would like it too much if the apprentice was using their stuff and making "pure profit" from the guys shop. Oh, they are going to "hide it"? Sounds like they are playing then. Okay, you have 5d4*10 in gold if you're a fighter. Okay, while you're character is trying to skim off of his employeer, PC#2, what's he doing? PC#3, what are they doing? And on. You've essentially started the game and they can do whatever they want then. I'm sure the other players would love to just "hang out". Oh and yes, when and where is the character going to sell these daggers? At the shop? Not likely. Are they going to be selling things in the back alley, all hush, hush? Doubt if those clients pay full price (if they pay at all and just take it from a "snot nosed punk". Also, how many daggers sell in a week? Remember, these are not Wal Marts where everyone buys a lot of things. What, the shop itseis going to push 4 maybe 5 daggers a week? This guy wants to dump a 100 or so? Law of supply and demand also kicks in. With so many daggers, the prices fall. Sounds still like you've already started the game. Oh yeah, dad and mom own the shop? Dad and mom STILL have to pay taxes, etc. It was everything they could do to scarpe up enough money to get junior that suit of armor as it is (still full "price" as far as "starting money" goes). Again, the answer is "No". |

I let my players start campaign with the items their characters crafted themselves - they can use what they crafted, or sell it in game. But there is no way I allow a player to sell items before the game starts. In other words, one can start with (effectively) triple starting wealth if one crafts all his items himself. One cannot start with more than normal amount of money, by crafting and selling goods. |
| Goblinchaser08-07-06, 02:12 PM | Agreed, a discount off starting goods, and beyond that nothing else... Although a unforgiving DM could make you roll craft rolls for each of your items you want crafted... with might expend valuable resources... metal gold, Break dad's set of favorite tongs... :P |
