| Velcro Zipper04-23-08, 02:33 PM | Some of you may have seen the notice posted on the main page that a 13' beholder would be touring downtown Seattle. Well, it's all true and I have proof. Behold...er.. the Beholder! http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n31/Zornhaschen/Beholderbeholdsher2.jpg A commercial for 4.0 was being filmed at Caf'e Umbria in Pioneer Square, and I got a few pics. My scooter and I may show up in the commercial since I drove by the window while they were filming. I'll be the guy on the black Buddy 125cc. |
| jokey66504-23-08, 03:04 PM | Hehe, it's actually kind of... cute. :3 |
| Shiftkitty04-23-08, 03:19 PM | Oh, man! They never do cool stuff like that here! If I ever get to see that commercial I'll keep an eye open for ya! (Although I do confess that on I-280 my friends and I shared the road with what turned out to be a pack of Trekkies headed for a convention. The funny part was that we didn't bat an eye at seeing a gang of Klingons on motorcycles. It looked so natural that we didn't realize they were Trekkies until after we hit the off-ramp! So I wonder if I'd even notice if a beholder drifted by the coffee shop window...) |
| green_yawgmoth04-23-08, 04:22 PM | Worst use of an apostrophe ever. The beholder thing is kind of amusing, though. |
| blodgett04-23-08, 04:23 PM | Anyone know what he ordered? |
| Zombie_Babies04-23-08, 04:26 PM | Worst use of an apostrophe ever. Mayhap it's a Drow establishment? |
| Olween04-23-08, 04:28 PM | Anyone know what he ordered? Something with a straw, I assume... |
| Zombie_Babies04-23-08, 04:43 PM | Anyone know what he ordered? A glass of Eyce Water. Then a Mocha Latteye. And he finished with an Eyebite. It's like a Snakebite, but, you know, not. |
| Velcro Zipper04-23-08, 04:43 PM | Here's another pic with a fuller view of the beholder. Also, I stand by my apostrophe in caf'e. It's my legal right to have it there and Merriam Webster.com agrees with me. So there. Bleh. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n31/Zornhaschen/Beholder.jpg |
| Shiftkitty04-23-08, 07:51 PM | Too bad they didn't put it up by an optometrist's office. (I would have suggested a Sunglass Hut, but then I remembered it's in Seattle. "We had some lovely weather this last summer. Came on a Tuesday I believe.") |
| green_yawgmoth04-23-08, 09:06 PM | Here's another pic with a fuller view of the beholder. Also, I stand by my apostrophe in caf'e. It's my legal right to have it there and Merriam Webster.com agrees with me. So there. Bleh. No they don't. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/caf%27e) If you want to put the é in café, break out the ascii symbols. :P |
| pigknight04-23-08, 09:51 PM | That's the biggest mini I've ever seen (and I got the Black and White Icons). Maybe the Beholder Mother is going to be in the MM? |

What word would describe it. Cartoony? |
| Escef04-24-08, 01:59 AM | God, I know it's offtopic, but that thing looks awful. What word would describe it. Cartoony? Yeah, man. Like a freakin floating eyeball sprouting 10 little eyeballs wasn't cartoony in the first place?! Look at the cover of the 1e MM, THAT'S cartoony! |
| ahiman04-24-08, 08:24 AM | I have to agree with the people who said it looked cartoony. I mean, come one, I will never be scared of a Beholder again, forever. It looks like it has bad sideburns made of flesh and has worms coming out of it head. I am from Seattle and I have to say, if I see it I will throw a sandwich at it, for fun. But hey its D&D, not something that really matters so I guess we should give it slack right? For god's sake its a hobby, a fun one at that... So why not have the Beholder riding a puppy! |
| yossarius04-24-08, 11:17 AM | http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n31/Zornhaschen/Beholderbeholdsher2.jpg Judging by the facial expression of the woman in the foreground, I think the beholder is saying, "Do I need a Tic-Tac?" |
| Velcro Zipper04-24-08, 03:45 PM | I admit I like the look of the 3.5 beholder better. The beholder mini in the new set isn't even called a beholder. It's called an Eye of Flame, so maybe that's what we're looking at. I got the impression the beholder was actually stalking the woman in the photo and she was trying to ignore it hoping it would go away. Sure they do (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/caf%27e) (At this point I'm only defending my apostrophe out of fun.) I appreciate your criticism of my grammar and punctuation. What you point out about ascii symbols and whatnot is what I intended, and I blame my complete ignorance of how to make ascii symbols. Cheers. |
| Shinikama04-24-08, 05:12 PM | If that's a mini... Does it still count as Colossal? Maybe it can be used as the God of Beholders... Do they even have one? |
| Shiftkitty04-24-08, 07:25 PM | (carrying booster pack to checkstand) "Oof!... I wonder... Oof! Ugh! what minis... Agh! are in ... Oof! this booster pack? Ack!" Followed by a serious hernia at the checkout. |
| ciaran04-24-08, 07:29 PM | His facial expression says "I'm confused... You should be running... Things are so much harder in the real world..." I live in Seattle and have spent many, many evenings in Pioneer Square - just not at crappy coffee shacks. I never heard about this! Wish I had. For the record, and I don't want to name names, ShiftKitty, ;) we have beautiful summers here. Though it did snow twice last week... |
| pigknight04-24-08, 09:47 PM | Look at its eye, it has buffalo wing sauce in its eye. I think it might just cry, look at it. |
| GhostVampire04-24-08, 10:54 PM | How much does something like that cost and what are they going to do with it when they're done with it? |
| Mock2604-24-08, 11:00 PM | Also, I stand by my apostrophe in caf'e. It's my legal right to have it there and Merriam Webster.com agrees with me. So there. Bleh. They don't agree with you. They are merely directing your incorrect spelling to the correct spelling! :D Also, there is no apostrophe in café. That little thing above the letter "e" is an "acute accent", or accent egu en français. |
| Mock2604-24-08, 11:01 PM | How much does something like that cost and what are they going to do with it when they're done with it? I think that it usually goes to Indianapolis each year for GenCon. |
| Clem-Da-Squig04-24-08, 11:52 PM | We must name it. |
| mathogre04-25-08, 09:00 AM | I have to agree with the people who said it looked cartoony. I mean, come one, I will never be scared of a Beholder again, forever. Ya know, siberian tigers look cute and cuddly from a distance. How could something with such pretty and soft fur be all that fierce? :OMG! |
| Velcro Zipper04-25-08, 01:15 PM | We must name it. It looks like a Milo to me. Also, there is no apostrophe in café. That little thing above the letter "e" is an "acute accent", or accent egu en français. My apostrophe is role-playing one of those things. It's got, like, eight levels in the "acute accent" prestige class. It's pretty freakin' sweet. |
| Mock2604-25-08, 01:56 PM | We must name it. Xagyg. |
| key04-25-08, 02:08 PM | We must name it. There are some who call him...Tim. |

| Clem-Da-Squig04-26-08, 01:09 AM | I like Milo. |
| celestialkin04-26-08, 03:20 AM | We must name it. Finface? |
| Wheldrake04-26-08, 10:05 AM | That's the biggest mini I've ever seen (and I got the Black and White Icons). Maybe the Beholder Mother is going to be in the MM? Question is, how do they fit it into one of those little bowes of pre-painted minis? |
| Velcro Zipper04-26-08, 11:13 PM | Question is, how do they fit it into one of those little bowes of pre-painted minis? It's inflatable. That, or it's like one of those tiny spongy dinosaurs you'd find at a dollar store. Step one: Soak in water. Step two: Giant fun! |
| MadPrak_Mark204-27-08, 12:27 AM | I am from Seattle and I have to say, if I see it I will throw a sandwich at it, for fun. Really? Because I think if I lived in Seattle, or if I still lived in Portland and could take a daytrip, My friends and I would gear up and charge the damned thing. Give 'em something to realy film... That'd be a damned awesome commercial... Especially since that's pretty much the entire idea of D&D: *Beholder standing in line at Cafe, trying to decide what to order* PC1: "Hey guys, is that a beholder over there?" PC2: "Hey yeah, I think you're right... what kinda treasure do they have?" PC1: "Pretty damned good treasure, plus there's the experience..." PC3: "And I can use it's eyestalks inplace of said XP to make-" PC4: "Please, just stop there, we really don't want to know what you're going to use the body for. Especially after last night with the howler..." PC1: "Well, let's get down there and kill, er... protect that fair coffee establishment from the vile monster!" *All charge, slay the beholder* PC3: "Hey, I just leveled up, now I can make an eve better wand!" |
| Shiftkitty04-27-08, 12:04 PM | I'd like to see a commerical where the beholder (I vote Milo as well) is floating down the street zapping everything with its eyes and the city is in a panic. Suddenly a bunch of pasty-skinned geeks come bursting out of a basement somewhere in the suburbs, hop on motor-scooters (or whatever it is we're supposed to drive), and race into town. They then surround the thing, which starts zapping them, but they retaliate by dropping to their knees and throwing d20s. Eventually, someone rolls a natural 20 and the things howls like a demonic horde and explodes in a burst of fire. Then you show the geeks receiving awards from the mayor, a big check for a bazillion dollars, and all of the hottest girls in town (and hottest guys, if the geeks include girls) are clamoring all around just for a chance to be seen with the geeks. Then do a voice over; "Someday, you'll thank us." Fade to black, show product. I have some other ideas as well, but they're best kept to myself. |
| Escef04-27-08, 12:06 PM | ... hop on motor-scooters (or whatever it is we're supposed to drive)... Nothing is dorkier than a Segway. |
| ciaran04-27-08, 02:35 PM | Segways for sure. And make sure that one or two of the pasty-skinned dudes gets zapped. |
| pigknight04-27-08, 07:32 PM | And then uses a healing surge (cause I wanna see what it looks like). |
| Mock2604-28-08, 03:01 AM | Anyone notice that the beholder was NOT inside the cafe? I bet you that he couldn't fit in the door and I also bet you that the beholder will now file a class action lawsuit seeking to require that all businesses in this country have doors wide enough to admit the passage of a beholder. |
| Shiftkitty04-28-08, 09:56 AM | We'd absolutely have to show the noble sacrifice by the pimply-faced pre-teen. (One of my other ideas was to show a Xena-type warrior chick mopping up a dingeon with all kinds of ugly monsters while she's practically busting out of her incredibly sexy and nowhere near practical armor. Toward the end of the commercial we see a group of players, Mountain Dew and Funyuns (or Cheetohs) in hand, with a spectacular view of the living wet-dream as she bends over to pick up a dropped weapon. One player simply says "It's good to be a geek.") |

| MadPrak_Mark204-28-08, 01:37 PM | Ok, so throw in a Conan type and some mountain dew swiging chicks. |
| Shiftkitty04-28-08, 03:14 PM | There ya go. Chapter two of the commercial. One sultry female sorceress surrounded by her retainers, a whole line of Chippendale male strippers clad in ultra-sexy barbarian loincloths. They carry her in on a tannequin and set her down. She steps down to the rest of the rest of the party who are staring like there's no way they're ever going to measure up to the beefcake parade. Cut to the geeks now staring at a gamer girl (same Mountain Dew/Funyun diet). She looks at them and says "What? I liberated them from a drow priestess before she could turn them into eunuchs in another dungeon." |
