I got this idea from an old Johnny Carson clip. Name things that explain being an adventurer. It can be any type, level, race...ANYTHING! I'll get this started...

Being an adventurer is...

constantly failing Spot checks even though there's someone right in front of you.
carrying three different weapons even though you use only one.
walking from town to town and only fighting one encounter no matter how far you walk.

(Yeah these aren't that good, I know)

I hope this thread gets some funny answers! :)

Knowing that everything in the world around you, really is out to get you. :D

Knowing that the number of people in your party will remain constant even if the faces change...

Is knowing that everything is possible, so long as it pleases the DM.
Except for all the things in the "Things that X is no longer allowed to do in X" threads
Well, more than once.

Constantly collected several items that are scattered across the globe/multiverse and having to bring them to somewhere only to have to go find another set of items.

Being an Adventurer is...

Having Instant Fame for things you've done completely out of sight, in secrecy, and never spoken of.

Always having readily available funds by slaughtering of innocent criminals.

Serving Paladins Falling Stew.

Never having to say sorry for making the Paladin take a Fall.

A way to be blown to smithereens...in a variety of interesting ways.

Being poor 24/7/53/eternity.

Facing off with your archnemesis that you never knew about until you met him/her.

Crawling down in the depths of the earth and sliding out into a underground lake with all your armor and weapons on ya. Sinking to the bottom (30ft). Holding your breath and failing your swimming check to be able to get out. Even after you have taken the heavy stuff off enough to make a sucessful swim check and than still failing (rolling below 5 for 10 rounds). Didn't drown but was getting ready to voluntarily.

... always having the feeling that your life is not quite your own?

... always having the feeling that your life is not quite your own?

Had that feeling a couple times. Like when the DM had me going through a vally of undead that would pop up every hour. Took the group 3days to get out (game time). I was soo sick of skeletons by the end of that part of the adventure. :yuck:

...knowing that no matter how many goblins/kobolds/etc you kill, they will never go extinct.

....knowing that even though you beat that evil guy today, there's another evil guy to beat tomorrow.

...travelling to strange and exotic lands to meet interesting people, kill them, and then take their stuff.

(can't believe I haven't seen that one already in the thread)

...being shot through the chest with a half-dozen arrows and not generally noticing.

...not being sure if it's a good thing that your sword just started to glow.

...calling upon the supreme, ancient arcane forces of the universe...to kill a mosquito.

...having no qualms about killing large numbers of people, stealing their posessions, and leaving their corpses to rot unburied. Except when dramatically appropriate.

...travelling with companions who can barely remember your name, just your job description.

...always being refered to by your "class", even when your actual job is quite different. ("So your 'sage' knows a lot of information, can cast a few spells, and orates practical advice in combat? Still smells like a bard to me." :weep: )

Knowing that the cookie jar more than likely has a few magical traps on it. (Soul in a cookie jar anyone?)

Knowing that the cookie jar is guarded by the seven dragons of doom, in the valley of utter despair, across the mountains of foreboding winds, surrounded by the lake of choking fire, and sought by the 25th subrace of evil elves with red hair.

And that the cookie jar will have a note in it saying, "Sorry, your cookies are in another jar."

Being an adventurer is...

...a mess of bad food, no sleep, and strange people inexplicably trying to stick pointed objects in bits of you.

...taking that suit of magic chain off the ogre, putting it on, having it resize to fit you but still stink of ogre.

... putting on the armor off of any fallen foe's back, not realizing that 'hey, it didn't help them much'.

... living to the tavern rule of 'When in doubt, start a brawl'.

... having more wagons to carry your stuff then your average caravan.
Sikyanakotik

...constantly encountering new classes, techniques, organisations, and forms of magic, all of which apparently just happened to be there all along without you noticing.

...facing enemies who, instead of attacking you all at once, wait around in small groups so you can butcher them more effectively.

...the indescribable feeling that comes after slaying your first dragon.

...trusting your comrades with your life, even when they're forced upon you by circumstance. No, especially then.

...never having to pay taxes on your considerable hoard of wealth. Because honestly, what tax collector would dare collect them?

...single-handedly demolishing the economies of small towns.

...knowing that every single non-monstrous person you come across can be loosely placed into one of approximately 30 convenient categories. Significantly fewer if you're playing core only.

...knowing that nightmarish horrors from beyond imagination are people too. ;)

Being an adventurer is...

Not my first choice of career. (My current character)

Lol, these are good! :D

Here's a couple I'm adding:

Being an adventurer is...

Haveing great arcane power able to fry anyone, and then finding out it doesn't work on a cockroach infestation in your home.

Being a rogue and realizeing your greatest enemy...is your party.

Running out of food on a long journey, and eating your wizard's bird familier...after making a fire out of her wands and staves.

Having time stop at intense moments, then looking to the sky and ask "Can I do [insert silly question about game mechanics]?"

Getting the feeling that your fights are less like combatants acting simultanously, and more like a Final Fantasy combat where everyone waits their turn.

Having time flash before your eyes, as you travel for many days without anything significant happening.

...taking that suit of magic chain off the ogre, putting it on, having it resize to fit you but still stink of ogre.
Does magic armor of a different size category than you resize to fit you? I thought it was only clothing and jewellery.

Being able to kill people for no other reason than their race, skin color, choice of religion, and being hailed a hero for it.
Being punished by gods for not healing your enemies.
Being always bothered by other peoples problems.
