| Naderion08-25-07, 11:50 AM | My 4 Favorites are Heroes of Horror: I like to run mature campaigns (not adult), that is fighting will keep you alive, but it won't solve problems. There is some fighting and often a lot of death, but that's not what the adventures are about. It's more about why and how things happen. Although it's names Heroes of Horror, the book has good advice on how to place the Characters into situation where they realize "****, we're totaly screwed." and they know what all is at stake and the victims will not be some statistical numbers of killed villagers but evry single life saved will have a meaning. Heroes of Horror gives a lot of good advice for that. Lost Empires of Faerūn: Somehow I just like ruins and tales of old heroes and legends and the flair of stroling through the long abandoned remains of history is really exiting to me. Lost Empires is a hoard of very good inspirations and even though I don't play Faerūn campaigns anymore since some years, it's still one of my favorite books. Lords of Madness: First, as you may have noticed, I just have a liking for mysterious events related to foreign and superior opponets. Lords od Madness is about Aberations and has just that. Second, this book is really just awsome! There's more fluff in there than in any other book and though I think they made up a lot of the stuff in there and don't cofirm completely with older sources, it's simply of incredible quality. Races of the Wild: Also, I like elves, and this book has a lot good stuff about elves. Somehow even the artworks make this one appear special. |
| Milo HoBo08-25-07, 11:51 AM | Complete Arcane Expanded Psionics Handbook Spell Compendium I'm hoping the Rules Compendium will be good. |
| MindLich08-25-07, 11:57 AM | -Player's Handbook II -FR Campaign Setting -Eberron Campaign Setting -ToB -Complete Divine |
| Ongorth08-25-07, 12:19 PM | While I still haven't read everything, I think my current top 3 would be -Tome of Battle (for giving D&D Kung Fu) -Denizens of Avadnu (for doing everything a monster encyclopedia is supposed to do) -Book of the Righteous (for delivering an entirely usable relgious tapestry inclusively) |
| MagicMouth08-25-07, 12:31 PM | Tome of Battle: For bringing D&D melee combat to a new and far more interesting level. Heroes of Horror: Good tips and mechanics for running darker campaigns, combined with some of the coolest crunch out there. Eberron Campaign Setting: A fresh, interesting and really good campaign world. |
| SokenzanMarauder08-25-07, 12:36 PM | Beyond the core three I consider the following the best: Heroes of Horror Libris Mortis Player's Handbook 2 Spell Compendium -Gen |
| cerberuspuppy08-25-07, 01:11 PM | Good thread. Let's see: PHB 2 (something for everyone) Magic Item Compendium (compendium with new stuff added to fill a niche) Spell Compendium (very useful) Complete Arcane (Warlock and cool spells) Complete Mage (coolness and power) Complete Warrior (coolness, if not power) Races of the Dragon (minus the spellscales) ECS (an original fantasy setting that gets around chronic problems of fantasy settings) And I'll throw in an honorable mention for the environment books, especially Sandstorm, which was my favorite of those. They were useful, yet different from what we usually see. |
| Ninetails Demon08-25-07, 02:15 PM | -Races of the Dragon -Expanded Psionics Handbook -Sandstorm -Libris Mortis. Just really liked these books (and they see regular use at my games!) |
| razorboy08-25-07, 02:17 PM | Excellent thread! My favorites in no particular order are: - Book of Nine Swords (What martial classes should be) - PHB2 (Like someone already said - something for everyone) - Heroes of Horror (I like running horror games, plus this book is chock full of encounters, cool monsters, maps, base and prestige classes, and a neat new mechanic - Taint. Example of a perfect book) - Complete Mage and Complete Scoundrel (probably the two best Complete books in my opinion) - Sandstorm (excellent, served as a source for many an encounter, and even a campaign) - Frostburn (ditto) - Magic Item Compendium (just get this book. Awesome wrapped in amazing) - Libris Mortis (undead, undead, and more undead, including how to better run, play and kill the undead. Excellent production value) - Lords of Madness (same, but substitute aberrations for undead) - Both Fiendish Codexes (Abyss and Hell) (Because the world needs more crunch and fluff on evil outsiders :) ) - Power in Faerun (perhaps the best fluff book ever written in the entire 3.0/3.5 editions) |
| The Livewire08-25-07, 02:38 PM | XPH- Just, Perfect. PHB II- Beguiler and Duskblade for the win. Unearthed Arcana- All this, and Open Content Too. Tome of Horrors I-III Tome of Artifacts- Good descriptions and humourus and useful. Legend of the Twins- All this and alternate realites too. Eberron Campaign setting. New way of looking at old stuff. Scarred Lands Campaign Setting- a truely epic setting. If you ever wondered what a smackdown between the Greek Gods and the Titans would do, this is the answer. |
| Shubert08-25-07, 04:46 PM | Complete Scoundrel - Just an awesome book all around, great classes, feats and art. The addition of luck feats and skill tricks has been extremely useful to many of my characters Complete Warrior - Not too many books have good base classes any more, it was nice to see a few in here as well as some of my favorite prestige classes. Also, the art is some of the best in any D&D book, just look at the Bloodhound. Eberron Campaign Setting - What an awesome book. I can't imagine playing in any other setting after reading it. Great new races as well, wonderful art. Dragon compendium - Yes, it's a bit of a crazy hodgepodge, but it's got some of the most interesting classes, prestige classes and races of any other book. I still haven't played D'vati, but I really want to! |
