3. Ravenloft (the 1e adventure)
4. Descent into the Depths of the Earth (1e)
5. A Paladin in Hell (2e)

I'm sorry, but I'd have to bump Temple of Elemental Evil to the top of the list man......it was the first DnD campaign i EVER played, and boy was it sweet. I was a ranger, (nuts about the dual short swords) and i remember assaulting the moathouse under cover of darkness with my 3 party members and the "guide" NPC we had. (DM gave us a 20th level fighter/mage that almost crackled and popped with glory, but held back so we could "learn the ropes".......my jaw dropped when i saw the stat sheet. He was a really good DM though.)

It was so cool, I slew the giant snake in the one room single handedly, and then accidentally dropped the gate on us in the dungeon by cutting the rope like a jackass.

Oh yea.

for 3rd edition....Forge of Fury is actually a pretty sweet module. It's a lot of fun, multiple factions of enemies, and all sorts of challenges to kill. I really do like it.

I didn't list any pre AD&D modules, because they ALL hold a special place in my heart *sigh* Ah, to be 12 again, back when my PC was written on looseleaf, and "The Secret of Saltmarsh" was the best adventure ever...

In no particular order...

Against the Giants through Shrine of the Kuo-toa and Vault of
the Drow - epic in the non-game mechanics sense of the word.

Temple of the Frog - from the Blackmoor supplement.

Lost Abbey of Calthonwey - truly awesome third-party adventure.

Village of Hommlet - the classic first-level adventure

And while not an adventure per se, my favorite setting...

Wilderlands of High Fantasy - the first D&D campaign-setting with airships and submarines?

Let's see, the ones which the players enjoyed the most?

4) Temple of Elemental Evil (T1-4)
3) Desert of Desolation Series (I3-5)
2) Caverns of Thracia (Judges Guild) (I DMed 150 different characters in that one over the years)
1) Dark Tower (Judges Guild) (Voted the all-time favorite after the one group completed it)

I've heard good things about "Judges GUild" stuff. I gotta get my hands on some.

Yes, you really do.

They're in the process of updating everything to 3.x - City-State of the Invincible Overlord is out, and the Wilderlands box set is due soon-ish (meaning I don't remember when exactly...). Caverns of Thracia is out as well.

I've heard and seen alot of cool things about City-State of the Invincible Overlord (and Empire of the Petal Throne, the setting in which the city-state resides). It looks like the guy who created it (can't recall his name, but I remember that he is a professor or PhD of some kind) did a great job of being original and breaking out of the Tolkien box (not that I don't love classic Tolkienian fantasy). The cultures and races seem quite alien.

Just FYI, CITY STATE OF THE INVINCIBLE OVERLORD has nothing to do with EMPIRE OF THE PETAL THRONE. EPT is what you're thinking of--created by Prof. M.A.R. Barker, a professor of Urdu and South Asian studies at the University of Minnesota (since retired). His world of Tekumel is a heavily Indo-Asian world with an extremely dedicated following. For more info, visit http://www.tekumel.com , the Professor's official web site.

(Incidentally, TSR originally sold EPT as a separate game using the OD&D system (which, to be fair, was the ONLY system at the time--circa 1975). Tekumel has since had several "systems"--but the fluff is what people want, and that changes little.)

Hope this helps.

In their day, Judges Guild put out some of the best D&D stuff ever, and also some of the worst. Do your homework first because much of it was crap. It seemed like everything they did was either on one end of the scale or the other; nothing was ever mediocre.

If you're interested and don't mind the DRM, some of their old stuff is available in PDF format from DriveThruRPG (.com). As was stated earlier, Necromancer Games is updating some old JG stuff to 3.5E. Caverns, City State, Wilderlands were all great and I can't wait to read 'em.

PS - Don't get the 3E update to Dark Tower. Everything I've heard about it was awful. Sadly, until the awful version sells out, it looks like this great adventure will never be updated properly.

The best D&D adventure ever published is X2- Castle Amber by a large margin. It is tied with the old Expert box but can be easily played with any version of the game.

The top ten:

1) X2 - Castle Amber
2) Nothing worthy of a second place
3) Nothing worthy of a third place
4) T1 - The Village of Hommlet
5) U1 - Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh
6) G1-3 - Against the Giants
7) A1-4 - Scourge of the Slavelords
8) T1-4 - Temple of Elemental Evil (T2-4 are not in the same league as T1)
9) D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth
10) D3 - Vault of Drow

Reptile God: I was hoping someone would mention that one! my player's party got captured and split up in that one. It was really cool seeing different PCs work on their own without as much backup.

1)the house of cards: from an old, old issue of dungeon magazine. the pc's must navigate a demon infested dungeon, however, most doors are "locked" by a card from the deck of many things.

2)the labyrinth of madness: tsr celebrated it's 20th anniversary with this damn near immpossible dungeon crawl.

3)the gates of firestorm peak: highlighting the players option series of books for 2nd ed.

4)the scar: from dungeon magazine. ray winninger's adventure based on the world of aris that was created in the dungeoncraft column had the pc's as slaves trying to escape capture from orcs.

No one's mentioned any of the original Dragonlance modules... what do people think of those?

While this wouldn't be number one for me, I think Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil is a good adventure. And I had a good DM running it.

I don't feel the need to repeat naming some of the great adventurers people have already mentioned... except for Temple of the Frog, from the Blackmoor supplement. The first published module ever!

I ran several of those, somewhere between the first four and the first eight, right after they came out. In general, my players and I didn't like them too much. They were interesting adventures, but they were too dependent upon story and railroaded the players into certain choices. Players very much felt like they were just along for the ride. Some of the different locales were interesting but, overall, they were nowhere near our top 20.

2. House on Gryphon Hill (Ravenloft)

Sulaco, I have always enjoyed your posts. I shall definately buy your adventure.

The only module I've ever played was the temple of elemental evil, so I can't really add much to this thread. 90% of my D&D has been homebrews. Has anybody tried The Speaker in Dreams? I'd like to know if it's any good.

Shameless promotions.... gotta love 'em. :D I haven't played a module in years, but that's because I have yet to find one worth buying. If it's not a campaign adventure, I'll give a try.
