| PrinceAzar05-22-05, 04:02 PM | Who are some of the better/more popular artists that do work for D&D products, that I can see more examples of their art elsewhere? I particularily like Mr. Lockwood's work :) |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht05-22-05, 05:09 PM | DiTellerzi (sp?) was excellent, but he doesn't draw for DnD anymore. Brom was also good, but once again, I'm not sure if he draws for DnD anymore. |
| PrinceAzar05-22-05, 05:19 PM | what edition did they draw for? |
| BladeDrinker05-22-05, 06:58 PM | If you click on the Art Gallery button on the left hand side of the screen, you can look at the art for most of the WotC books. Many of the later books have the artist listed with the picture. This is also a pretty common topic, so you could try going to google and restricting the domain to boards1.wizards.com and searching for threads relating to favorite DnD artists. Todd Lockwood is a pretty big name, and you find pictures of his stuff at (shocklingly) www.toddlockwood.com/ (http://www.toddlockwood.com/). Lockwood and Sam Wood did a lot of work for third edition. |
| PrinceAzar05-22-05, 07:25 PM | oh, the acronyms SW in the Monster Manual, I get it  |
| Gil Gwath05-22-05, 07:35 PM | Oh my God, this makes me feel old.... ;) Elmore every day of my life... (my first original D&D books are signed guess by who?) and sure not to forget John Howe....don't think he draw exactly for D&D anyway |
| e-z0r05-22-05, 07:51 PM | There was a really big thread pair, worst art ever in a wotc product and best art ever in a wotc product, just search them down, they're in this forum area. |
| jukar05-22-05, 09:41 PM | Rebecca Guay. I adore her. |
| Elven Doritos05-22-05, 10:07 PM | Dennis Crabapple McClain is kewl... ...Just kidding. Seriously, though, Wayne Reynolds is a D&D Art god. Best item guy ever, and all of his work is amazing. |
| obrysii05-22-05, 10:08 PM | Todd Lockwood and Wayne Reynolds, without question. |
| Edymnion05-22-05, 10:19 PM | Steve Prescott (http://www.rottface.com/) http://www.rottface.com/images/mg_dr_01.jpg |
| J.Augustus Rose II05-22-05, 11:05 PM | Rebecca Guay. I adore her. Her art is the most charming and high quality art D&D has to offer, in my opinion. Lockwood is good to a point. His designs are good but his art is very stiff. There's little emotion to it. |
| Dalthbar05-22-05, 11:57 PM | DiTerlizzi - hands down. http://www.diterlizzi.com/ I think someone asked above, but he did the majority of the Planescape books as well as a number of other art for a long while. Shame he's no longer illustrating for D&D. |
| Cog05-23-05, 12:11 AM | My personal favourite is Lockwood, but all of the above mentioned artists are exceedingly talented. :) |
| Wharin05-23-05, 12:21 AM | 1. Belledin 2. Jarvis 3. Guay Before i knew who Belledin and Jarvis were, i was a fanatical Guay... er... fanatic. The only problem with her art is that it doesnt lend it self well to certain subjects that she has tried to draw recently (muskrats and dwarves). Though if she ever drew a Arthurian picture book, i would be all over that in a second. |
| babysamurai05-23-05, 07:28 AM | Anybody who's not Clyde Caldwell (all those tacky rhinestones). |
| RavinRay05-23-05, 07:46 AM | Todd Lockwood is a pretty big name, and you find pictures of his stuff at (shocklingly) www.toddlockwood.com/ (http://www.toddlockwood.com/). Lockwood and Sam Wood did a lot of work for third edition. Sadly, it seems that he no longer draws for D&D, according to his website, did I guess right? I loved his work in Draconomicon, especially the close-ups of the dragon heads and dragon anatomy. BTW, I've been dying to find out who did the gem dragons for MM2. I can't for the life of me figure out whose logo that was. Anyone knows? DiTerlizzi also did the covers of the Spiderwick books. He's quite good with drawing fey creatures and the like. |
| babysamurai05-23-05, 07:56 AM | I still like the slightly comic bookish art from the original 1st edition Deities & Demigods (especially the Melnibonean mythos). |
| skathros05-23-05, 08:03 AM | Although i doubt anyone here would remember...Stephen Fabian. |
| Sephyrill05-23-05, 08:26 AM | From book Art, definately Lockwood, Sam Wood and Reynolds for overall art Elmores and di Terlizzis Art were among the greatest in 2nd Ed :) and Elmore has this variety of styles (if not every second girl of him was half naked.... :D ) I also like the art of Jason Engle from Lost empires of Faerun from Dungeon or Dragon my favourite Artist is Eva Widermann, because of the motion and style of her pictures (she is better known when it comes to other d20 books ;) ) the Picture of Prescott looks awesome... nice. Is it from Eberron? |
| Seldarin05-23-05, 09:34 AM | My favorites are the following (not in any order) : Wayne Reynolds, Todd Lockwood, Wayne England (especially his arms and equipment drawings), Sam Wood and Rebbeca Guay. And many others ... |
| Draco Strang05-23-05, 10:53 AM | Lockwood. Finally, an artist who did Drizzt a little justice. His 3.0/3.5 incarnation is the first that doesn't look like a girl or a grumpy old man with a big metal thing on his forehead. Finally, drow look cool instead of resembing humans with black skin and point ears. Elmore, for sheer detail and "Wow" factor. His was the first D&D artwork I was exposed to, and and stuck with me. That picture in the 2nd edition PHB of the adventuring party standing around the dead dragon with a tiny box of treasure on the ground is just beautiful. |
| Muttifoot05-23-05, 11:08 AM | It's got to be Elmore for me. His 'Raistlin and Crysania' painting from the original cover of Time of the Twins is just perfect. It captures the spirits of the characters just right. I have a signed print of that painting hanging in my house. Brom is a close second for sheer skill and originality. |
| weasel fierce05-23-05, 01:52 PM | Elmore is pretty much /the/ D&D artist, IMO. Im also partial to the insanity that is Erol Otus. |
| Draco Strang05-23-05, 01:56 PM | Im also partial to the insanity that is Erol Otus. Long live Hackmaster, eh? |
| Edymnion05-23-05, 02:45 PM | the Picture of Prescott looks awesome... nice. Is it from Eberron?Yeah, its the Eberron Drow. Screw that dark angsty Faerun stuff, they're primative natives in Eberron. Prescott also did a LOT of the art in Races of Eberron, check him out :) http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20050413a |
| weasel fierce05-23-05, 03:08 PM | I dont know if "Angsty" can be applied to the Drow as they originally appeared in Greyhawk. They seem to be pretty content doing what they do. Not sure about new FR though. |
| Sephyrill05-23-05, 03:20 PM | Yeah, its the Eberron Drow. Screw that dark angsty Faerun stuff, they're primative natives in Eberron. Prescott also did a LOT of the art in Races of Eberron, check him out :) http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20050413a awesome, really... maybe I could start liking Drow ^^ I think I should read more about Eberron drow, they really look as if they were.. um... just "normal" wild elves with a beautiful dark colour |
| PrinceAzar05-23-05, 04:06 PM | Yeah, its the Eberron Drow. Screw that dark angsty Faerun stuff, they're primative natives in Eberron. Prescott also did a LOT of the art in Races of Eberron, check him out :) http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20050413a Yea...Edy, buddy, i'm all for Eberron, my 2nd favorite published campaign setting, but i think you're taking 1 individual and spreading them as the basis of one race's attitude. Try to think before you type, ok? ;) |
| Edymnion05-23-05, 05:13 PM | Try to think before you type, ok? ;)Yeah, thanks, I do. Some of the Drow in Eberron are barely above throwing their own feces at each other. Most of them are barely at the iron age level that lets them have "normal" weapons and tools. A very few are more advanced. All of them live in the jungles. Eberron Drow are not the advanced culture they are in Faerun or even default D&D. They are a race of highly fractured tribes running around in the jungles, with varying levels of advancement. The ones with high enough technology levels to be as good or better than the rest of the campaign are VERY few in number, and since Eberron Drow are not evil and oppressive, there is virtually no reason for them to have members running away to become PCs on the other side of the world. But this has nothing to do with the artist love-fest. Go Prescott! |
| PrinceAzar05-23-05, 05:20 PM | I meant in reference to Forgotten Realm drow, not those of Xen'drik. Anyhow, i don't want to get in a fight, I respect you as a member here. does anyone here know who did the artwork for Deities and Demigods? Oh yea, and the lady artist who drew for Races of the Wild, particularily the halflings, did a great job :) |
| Edymnion05-23-05, 05:33 PM | I meant in reference to Forgotten Realm drow, not those of Xen'drik.Ah, okay, whoops, my mistake. Sorry man :) |
| SneakyPetey05-24-05, 12:12 AM | Elmore is pretty much /the/ D&D artist, IMO. Im also partial to the insanity that is Erol Otus. Let's not forget the immortal Willingham and Sutherland (their first names escape me) from the 1st Edition pantheon... :) |
| Sephyrill05-24-05, 01:39 PM | Oh yea, and the lady artist who drew for Races of the Wild, particularily the halflings, did a great job :) yep, true ^^ and I do love the picture of the champion of Corellon PS: for more of Eva's Art go here (http://www.eva-widermann.de) there are not that many Pictures but it is a good display for her variety of styles |
| wordserpent05-24-05, 02:28 PM | I still like the slightly comic bookish art from the original 1st edition Deities & Demigods (especially the Melnibonean mythos). That would be the work of Jeff Dee. |
| Syrus The Red05-24-05, 06:14 PM | All of these great artists and nobody mentioned Boris Vallejo?! I believe he used to do "good ol' DnD" artwork back in the day. Also I greatly enjoy Phil & Kaja Foglio's art even though their art is more cartoony than "fantasy-istic". |
| troutman05-24-05, 06:19 PM | Erol Otus Shrines: http://jrients.tripod.com/otus/otus.html http://minipainting-guild.net/eo/eohome.html Now doing art for Goodman Games: http://www.goodman-games.com/index.php |
| ssvegeta55505-24-05, 11:31 PM | My favorites are the following (not in any order) : Wayne Reynolds, Todd Lockwood, Wayne England (especially his arms and equipment drawings), Sam Wood and Rebbeca Guay. And many others ... These are my fav also. I also like Jason A. Engle. His work is good, it has a hazzy flare type thing i his art (thats the best I can describe as I really dont know what it is, but it looks cool). To see what I mean check these out. Pic 1 (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/leof_gallery/86715.jpg) Pic 2 (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/leof_gallery/86690.jpg) Pic 3 (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/leof_gallery/86697.jpg) Pic 4 (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/leof_gallery/86723.jpg) Pic 5 (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/cor_gallery/89576.jpg) (one of my favorites of his) |
| Drone2305-25-05, 11:36 AM | My absolute favorite artist is Erol Otus (so much so I named a character after him, Suto Lore). I know, I know, he's not very good but he's the guy who did a lot of art for Basic (Red Box) D & D and he's who I grew up on. Caldwell, Elmore, and Lockwood are all pretty identifiable; I mean, you can look at a painting and know exactly which of those did it (although sometimes I mistake a Caldwell for an Elmore and vice versa, their styles are so similar). The same goes for old Erol. You can say, "Hey, there's an Erol Otus!" He's pretty distinctive, there's no mistaking him for someone else. I'm so glad he's teamed up with Goodman Games (another fave of mine) and I can see his new art. He's back, baby! |
| Seldarin05-25-05, 11:55 AM | ... does anyone here know who did the artwork for Deities and Demigods?... Kyle Anderson, Glen Angus, Matt Cavotta, Dennis Cramer, Tony DiTerlizzi, Jeff Easley, Donato Giancola, Lars Grant-West, Rebeccca Guay, Matt Mitchell, Eric Peterson, Wayne Reynolds, Darrel Riche, Richard Sardinha, Brian Snoddy with Justin Norman, Arne Swekel, and Sam Wood... |
| Sulaco05-25-05, 12:06 PM | Wayne Reynolds. No contest. |
| Sulaco05-25-05, 12:07 PM | You can say, "Hey, there's an Erol Otus!" He's pretty distinctive, there's no mistaking him for someone else. I'm so glad he's teamed up with Goodman Games (another fave of mine) and I can see his new art. He's back, baby! Oh...Dear...God...No... |
| PrinceAzar05-25-05, 12:36 PM | Something strange, in Complete Divine, there is a class for dwarves, an Ollum or Olem(forgot exact name) and in Races of Stone, the same art is used for another class there, a female dwarf with a book in her hand. Has anyone noticed this? |
| PrinceAzar05-26-05, 04:29 AM | :bump: |
| Cli' San Aquanova05-26-05, 10:06 AM | Raven Mimura, Sam Wood, Todd Lockwood, Wayne Reynolds, and Rebecca Guay all the way. Raven and Sam had to carry the Unapproachable East book all by themselves, what with the horrendous other art in there. Anytime I go to buy a book, I check the interior artists list in the credits. If Mimura is in it, I'll buy it, but I prefer Mimura with the four others I mentioned in the book as well. -C'SA :u:Bring Back Merfolk!!!:u: |
| The Merciful05-26-05, 03:20 PM | Didn't I read carefully enough, or doesn't this thread actually have one single mention of the 1st & 2nd edition artist Jeff Easley? Only "reason" to not consider him great is the fact he was used so often in earlier edition book covers, and inside art, that one could get overexposed, but, boy, he is good artist. Good use colour, great expressiveness, professional composition, well compined realism and sence of wonder and fantasy. |
| Agun_de_Merak05-27-05, 02:55 AM | ok from the old edition i'm amazed that no one as say BROM wow this guy art is really amazing for 3,5 i say without esitation reynolds, prescott lockwood and woods |
| babysamurai05-27-05, 06:55 AM | ok from the old edition i'm amazed that no one as say BROM wow this guy art is really amazing for 3,5 i say without esitation reynolds, prescott lockwood and woods Absolutely, Brom was the main reason I got into Dark Sun back in the day. When that Tom Baxa hack (boy does he suck) started doing more of the DS art, the world lost a lot of its appeal. |
| Wharin05-27-05, 10:18 AM | Something strange, in Complete Divine, there is a class for dwarves, an Ollum or Olem(forgot exact name) and in Races of Stone, the same art is used for another class there, a female dwarf with a book in her hand. Has anyone noticed this? It was due to a goof, either on the artist's part, or the description he got (because i think Belladin is the man, i am believing the later): The oringal battlesmith picture this one (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ros_gallery/83305.jpg) had the guy wielding an axe (presumabely a dwarven battle axe). While very possible for a battlesmith to be wielding an axe, it didnt match the spirit of the class, which gives bonuses when the battlesmith wields a hammer. Thus, they went with the picture of the Ollam from Complete Arcane. Or at least, thats the story (that i pretty much had to put together on my own) that makes the most sense. |
| Count Arioch the 28th05-27-05, 10:23 AM | I like Crabapple's work. Not when he tried to draw humanoids, because he usually fails miserably. However, no one draws disgusting tentacle monsters like Crabapple. I wish I was a disgusting tentacle monster. I'll have to settle for just being disgusting. Oh, and I like however drew the hot dwarf beholder-priestess in Lords of Madness. On account that she's hot. |
| Wharin05-27-05, 10:57 AM | Indeed. Especially considering that "hot" and "dwarf" rarely are found in the same sentence. I mean... its a silly head-dress, but i've seen runway shows with just-as-bad ones |
| Teron Gorefiend05-27-05, 01:34 PM | Off the top of my head, my favourites are Rebecca Guay and Wayne Reynolds. Incidentally, both contribute to Magic: The Gathering, with Reynolds being a recent and brilliant addition (This speaks for itself (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/mtgcom_arcana_747_pic1_en.jpg)). On the other hand, I'm annoyed with Wayne England. I like a few of his Magic paintings, but a lot of his D&D work is sub-par, and some of the Magic stuff shows a (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/invasion/slinking_serpent.jpg) distinct (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/odyssey/stone_tongue_basilisk.jpg) lack (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/judgment/worldgorger_dragon.jpg) of (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/odyssey/balshan_griffin.jpg) originality (http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/planeshift/hunting_drake.jpg). |
| BloodyRoots05-27-05, 02:53 PM | WAR IS A GOLDEN GOD! Im liking Prescot a lot right now. Lockwood is awsome. Belledin, Jarvis are also really good. These guys have similar styles. there are a few more I like alot. A few that have been mentioned I dont like at all. I wont point my fingers at anyone becuse that would be rude. |
| Wharin05-27-05, 04:12 PM | I definately like WAR. My only comment on him is that every humanoid, reguardless of race, is tremendously broad, like a dwarf. Being a dwarfophile, i dont see this as a bad thing, but stylistically, i can see how people would consider this a flaw. And Wayne England has this same problem that i used to do alot and that was balloon every creatures biceps waaaaaaaay too much. None of them looked like they whould be able to move. And yes, i too see a complete lack of originality. I like the attention he gives to weapons though. Gotta give him credit there. |
| The nameles one05-27-05, 04:21 PM | I like Jason A. Engle's work as well. My other favorites are Lockwood, Guay and DiTerlizzi. But then again most of the 3rd edition art is pretty good. |
| lucky205-27-05, 09:46 PM | Really like Fishbone's. I dunno his real name...But it's the guy who does this (http://wizards.com/dnd/images/dmg35_gallery/DMG35_PG176_WEB.jpg) one. |
| Cli' San Aquanova05-27-05, 10:36 PM | I forgot to mention that Puddnhead is damned talented and underrated IMO. I remember him way back on the UBB boards. I definately like WAR. My only comment on him is that every humanoid, reguardless of race, is tremendously broad, like a dwarf. Being a dwarfophile, i dont see this as a bad thing, but stylistically, i can see how people would consider this a flaw. And Wayne England has this same problem that i used to do alot and that was balloon ever creatues biceps waaaaaaaay to much. None of them looked like they whould be able to move. And yes, i too see a complete lack of originality. I like the attention he gives to weapons though. Gotta give him credit there. I don't quite agree with your Reynolds assessment. I can think of many pictures that aren't overly broad. However, Mr. Reynolds does indeed have an achilles' heel, and that is feet. I'll be damned if every foot WAR has drawn for D&D has looked like a tetrahedron or octahedron. That said, Mr. Reynolds is one of my favorite artists as I earlier said. My favorite piece of his is the Genasi in Monsters of Faerun. No artist has drawn Genasi better than Mr. Reynolds in that artpiece. I especially hold it dear because it was my first experience of Genasi; I bought MoF before the FRCS corebook, and WAR has imprinted that magnificent artwork into my head whenever it comes to thinking of Genasi. As for Wayne England, I think he needs to stick with weapons. He excells in it. And regarding Crabapple... all I can say is that he tries, bless his heart. I've not found a single work of his that I enjoyed. To be honest, I've seen much better "slimey, gross" artpieces, some being in the core Monster Manual. :) -C'SA :u:Bring Back Merfolk!!!:u: |
