| Sajek04-04-07, 01:27 PM | In an action movie, the hero never just shoots the BBEG. He always has to shove a grenade down his throat or kick him into an electric fence. Post some ideas of great BBEG finishers here (preferably with a witty quip!). 1. After a lengthy duel aboard your ship, you are about to finish off the vampire pirate captain. He is standing on the edge of the figurehead. He laughs condescendingly "How do you plan to kill what is already dead!?" You say "LIKE THIS!" and cast flesh to stone. You then kick him off the side. As you watch him sink, you mutter to yourself "How statuesque." 2. Throw your opponent into the gears of Mechanus 3. Cast wall of force in a dome around your opponent, followed by create water inside it. Summon a dire shark. 4. THIS IS SPARTA!!! |
| darkneolink04-04-07, 01:48 PM | 5.-enemy charges to the group paladin and the cleric cast implotion on him cleric: BOO barracuda |
| Tempest Stormwind04-04-07, 01:56 PM | *sigh* It's fine and dandy, but if it breaks the rules (like casting through a wall of force), it probably isn't going to work. Some of my best have included vaporizing the floor underneath an assassin, who grabbed the edge with his fingertips (high reflex save), letting our team lead grab him and ask for just one thing -- a look at the face of the man he was sending to hell. One mental disruption later and he was thrown down the pit into the magma below (disruption because we'd seen him teleport before; if he can take no actions he meets the flames). The best, though? Passing the DM a sealed envelope. Three sessions later, upon finally cornering the vampire we were chasing, he tricked us into splitting up, and then isolated my character. Some clever roleplay and a phenominal Bluff roll later and I had him convinced he should hide for a better chance at revenge, so he goes gaseous... and I tell the DM to open the envelope. Inside were instructions on what I would do were this situation to occur -- namely, I withdrew a set of fireplace bellows (thoughtfully purchased amidst a large list of mundane gear earlier), sucked in the now-gaseous vampire, and corked it. Rather anticlimactic, I admit, but the DM's told me that if I plan to beat any other villains with household appliances, it has to be at least as advanced as a lawnmower. |
| Sajek04-04-07, 02:05 PM | That assasin one was pretty awesome, Tempest. Keep them coming! |
| RobbyPants04-04-07, 02:06 PM | In an action movie, the hero never just shoots the BBEG. He always has to shove a grenade down his throat or kick him into an electric fence. Post some ideas of great BBEG finishers here (preferably with a witty quip!). I remember watching the movie Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis, and that's exactly what happened. It seemed so anti-climactic. 6) Disitegrate a structural support so the BBEG is crushed and takes far more damage than he would have from the spell itself. |
| Sajek04-04-07, 02:13 PM | Ok, maybe the wall of force+create water wouldn't really work (didn't know WoF blocked LoE). Maybe create water and then a quickened WoF to hold it? 7. Wall of iron, kick it over onto someone. |
| Kazgoth04-04-07, 02:24 PM | A small group of ogres and an ogre magi attacked my group, and they killed the ogres and damaged the magi enough that he turned invisible and flew away. Intending to have him heal a bit and observe the party, I flew him straight up. In a fit of pique, our rogue said he was going to the spot he disappeared at and shot straight up. Got a lucky shot, and with a bolt and some dripping blood there was enough to make an attempt at missile fire, and they ended up killing it anyway. No fancy dialogue, but was a moment to remember. |
| SephDragoon04-04-07, 02:54 PM | I have three, real occurances. 8) The first wasn't a BBEG, but a really hard monster we were fighting. Our barbarian, a 6 ton warforged, had used his spider climbing item to get onto the roof of a huge cavern. We were about to retreat when we look up to a giant warforged screaming, "Jeranimo!" as he sailed down on top of the even bigger beatle. However, from sheer distance and weight, he crushed the thing to death. It wasn't all that much of a finisher, but it suprised all of us. 9) The second was in the same dungeon when we actually did come across the Boss of that dungeon. We had a plan to lead him to a pool of rather varacious living acid (it would crawl onto you to eat you, but it was closer to algie(sp?)). He wasn't falling for it though, and we had to come up with a new plan. Well, the boss was a vermin lord, so what I did was grab a bunch of the acid telekinetically, and fling it at him. The last words he heard was, "If you can't lead the bug to his death, bring death to him!" 10) The last one was an occurance that was no finisher at all, but the beginning of a fight. This construct was trying to arrest us under the new rule (one we are fighting against). We essentially told it to screw itself and we attacked first. Well, our fighter is a construct hunter. During his military days, he spent all of his time hunting down warforged. So, he took a feat to critical constructs. He told us as he charged, "The big one is mine." Indicating we could have the little guys he brought with him. A nat 20, confirmation and roll of the critical table later, the "big guy's" head was rolling on the ground. Not quite as epic as others. But I enjoyed them all. |
| Karish04-04-07, 08:06 PM | Okay, here we go. This was, basically, my favorite "kill" ever. A character of mine, lower level, had somehow discovered the secret of where the Tarrasque's lair was in this world. It happened to be in a massive ruin under a mountain in a desert. He also had access to a one-time use item that would teleport the user to a pre-programmed location. ...He programmed it to there, and the BBEG for the low-level portion of the campaign was a thief. He made it out during his whole expedition to hunt down the thief, that he had managed to find the stone, and that it led to an ancient city, filled with riches. We played this up, and the wizard of the party assisted using illusions to make things seem real. The BBEG stole it, and was never seen again. |

| Imatash04-04-07, 11:45 PM | Partial TPK and really end of game finisher A long time ago in a campaign far far away: The Party was between the levels of 20-24. I had taken over as DM and my character decided to retire (22nd lev LE Cavalier) and mind the castle. His best friend a wizard carried a token of him that made him appear fully armoured and armed if broken. The Party, said LE Wizard, CN Barbarian, N Druid, CG Ran/Cleric and CN Fighter were walking into a dragons lair. They crossed a Rune of Discord. The entire party started fighting among themselves. At the height of the fight the Dragon finally attacks. As one character after another goes down the Wizard gets hit. As almost everyone but the Barbarian and Ran/Cleric was down the Wizard pleaded for a saving throw on the token to see if it smashed under the dragons breath. I allowed it to happen as a Why Not and a 1 was rolled. The Token broke the Cavalier with his Vorpal sword destroyed the dragon. He was next yelled at by the CN Barbarian who he never really liked and so ...20....and the head was gone. With the Barbarian dead and everyone else unconscious the Cavalier decided to kill the Ran/Cleric who he never liked either.....He picked up his friend the Wizard and left. End of campaign Imatash |
| razorboy04-04-07, 11:54 PM | Hmmm, I pulled this one on my players: They are fighting a demon on top of an old haunted castle, just as a thunderstorm is raging around them. The party's fighter, wielding a greatspear scores a critical on the already weakened demon, confirms it and kills the demon. I describe the death as the demon being carried over the edge of the battlement clutching the spear that skewered him, just as a lightning hits him with a thunderous crack. Hey, might not be physically possible, but a crit's a crit, and a thunderstorm was just begging to kill someone. Everyone loved the extra touch. :) |
| Someone04-05-07, 12:02 AM | Okay, so this is from a kung-fu B movie rather than D&D, but I think the best finisher was the "cruise coffin". The heroes are sneaking along, pretending to be undertakers, when they confront the BBEG. One of the heroes throws the coffin from the cart at the BBEG. And I mean THROWS, like the thing was a paper airplane. A bit more of a fist fight later, the heroes stuff the BBEG into the coffin and throw it through a wall. And again, really THROW the thing. The movie kinda ends after that. |
| bobothechimp04-05-07, 01:00 AM | Ok, on the mention of sparta, great situation involving that. I was DMing for the Sunless Citadel adventure. The party was fighting the goblin chief in a room basically shaped like a donut, with a large pit in the center. They kill everyone but the goblin chieft, who is left standing next to the edge of the pit. The fighter intimidates him by pointing his sword at his throat. At this point, everyone just sort of looked at each other. I think most of them got it, and started holding back laughter. Fighter: "You bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to my city's steps. You insult my queen. You threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh, I've chosen my words carefully, Goblin. Perhaps you should have done the same!" Goblin Chief: "This is blasphemy! This is madness!" Fighter: "Madness? THIS IS FAERUN!" *Bull Rush* That stopped the game for about an hour. |
| SephDragoon04-05-07, 01:20 AM | Did the warforged take equal damage from the fall? :P Not equal, you have to remember, alot of the damage was from his weight, not the fall. But he took full damage for the fall itself. Plus the beatle thing took extra damage from the fist... Needless to say, it was the 10 ton punch, if you know what I mean! |
| TalRave04-05-07, 02:34 AM | Yeah... I learned my lesson just last game I did of having specialist NPCs help the party. 2 characters, a 10th level paladin (with quite a long story, started as a barbarian, but I won't get into that here unless someone asks), and a 7th level half-silver dragon sorcerer. They are on the trail of an Adult Black Dragon. I figure that it's probably a slaughter if I don't help, so I assign them an overseer to the mission, a 5th level Cleric / 8th level Knight armed with Dragonreaver, a +3 Keen Greatsword of Dragon Bane. AND arm them with a ballista specially weighted to try and take the dragon out of the air. Fight starts, dragon runs an acid line over them, doing a load of damage. Paladin shoots the ballista, and gets a 19, which was enough to hit. Sorcerer casts Hailstones... Dragon lands, tears up and attacks the paladin. Knight attacks. Critical. 68 Damage ends up being rolled. Battle goes on, eventually the dragon takes to the air again, and has the Sorcerer near death. In an attempt to save her, the Knight throws the sword. Major penalties. No chance to hit unless.... Nat 20. He basically hammer throws the slaying sword... and hits... for another 68. Dragon dead. I considered fudging it for the dragon so the NPC didn't get the big finish, but the players demanded that the rolls stay. They travel to deserts next, and they will NOT get assistance for the Blue waiting somewhere within.... lol |
| Gamili04-05-07, 04:57 AM | I find it quite amazing that most of the events in this thread are concidered awesome because they rape the rules and it's children. Kudos on Sparta, though. |
| Spikes01k04-05-07, 09:03 AM | IDK if this fits the bill or not but it is epic. My party and I had accidentally activated 3-4 different encounters at the same time! Keep in mind our party is extremely gun-ho. First we saw the temple's leader confronted us and stated that we would pledge our allegiance to him and his god. I confronted him about our fallen ninja we lost when he came down the elevator alone. He throw me his head, and dropped his corpse down to our level. The fight with the archers from high ground started. After we had just about won that fight the leader pushed a button and we heard a loud squeal from our left as a Dire Bore rammed into the door we nailed shut knocking one of them open. We all looked at the boar and screamed "Bacon!". Our wizard turned and rolled max damage on her flaming hands spell and roasted the thing instantly. Shocked by the one hit wonder we all looked at each other and screamed even more enthusiastically "BACON!!!". The scout archer then shot the temple leader with a max damage critical hit, and fell over dead. |
| Psychoticpsymon04-05-07, 10:09 AM | 4. THIS IS SPARTA!!! 4+x: THIS IS cake town! |
| lastknightleft04-05-07, 11:02 AM | The evil fighter in our group was fighting in a room with an NPC assasin whom she was passing quips back and forth with. The fighter disarms a guy and uses his weapon to cut down the guy fighting with him, she turns to the assasin and says "Top that!". The assasin had gotten behind an overturned table and knew there was an enemy on the otherside in dire straights from some of the other party members. So he bullrushes the table into the enemy and the DM says the table unexpectadly striking the guy on the other side in the back dealt a small amount (1d4 i think) bludgeoning damage. Turned out the damage was enough to take the enemy down, the assasin turns to the fighter and says, "try killing a guy with a table." |
| Gideon_Gideonson04-05-07, 11:09 AM | Well, this one was used by my Darfellan Harpooner: Step 1: Impale Opponent Step 2: Grab restraining line and pull opponent up right next to me. Step 3: Kick opponent off weapon. Step 4: Stab weapon into opponent's falling body. |
| Sajek04-05-07, 11:16 AM | I find it quite amazing that most of the events in this thread are concidered awesome because they rape the rules and it's children. The best finishers always bend the rules a little. |
| Hayabusa04-05-07, 11:19 AM | 19: Here is your ransom! A band of ogres had kidnapped the duke's daughter and was holding her for ransom. Not wanting to negotiate with these thugs, the Duke hired a band of mercenaries (that's us) to rescue her. We devised a two-pronged attack, one group sneaking in through a cave system and the other was to cause a diversion at the front gate. My character, a Paladin, was assigned to be the "leader" of the first strike team. We got through the caves with no problem--save for one or two sentries that were easily taken care of--and then we waited for the diversion to begin. The second team approached the main gate of the fortress, a large treasure chest being carried by the two strongest members. The guards at the front gate approached and prepared to inspect the chest. The party tells them that inside the chest is the ransom required by the leader. The guard opens the chest to inspect and count the gold inside, and then the trap is sprung. The party's halfling, who has been hiding inside of the chest all along, fires a crossbow bolt into the ogre's neck, the sneak attack damage kills it. We eventually are able to kill the Ogre Mage leader and rescue the Duke's daughter, making this tale the best finisher that I can remember, as well as the best ambush. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_04-05-07, 11:26 AM | I find it quite amazing that most of the events in this thread are concidered awesome because they rape the rules and it's children. I find it amazing that anyone cares more about the rules than dramatic and memorable gaming events. We have a two-part house rule in our games: When you deal a crippling blow (dropping enemy to -1 through -9 hp) you can choose to make it a specific significant effect such as lopping off a hand, blinding, etc.. When you deal a "killing blow" (-10 hp or below) you can choose to make the kill dramatic and situationally appropriate (knocking enemy into spinning gears, etc.). Since the enemy is either out of commission or dead anyway why not make it something more interesting than "You hit him, he drops". |
| Kusari_Gamer04-05-07, 01:11 PM | I find it amazing that anyone cares more about the rules than dramatic and memorable gaming events. Damn right. |
| Thraat04-06-07, 12:30 AM | I remember a few things, though the finishers are just mundane compared to the others posted, though they all are with the same group of people: Human Fight 6th level, Feral Human (+2 LA, 28-30 str, not raging), Half-Ogre cleric (22-24 str)... First encounter was in a swamp with a group of two Harpies who used capitivating song and the party fails their saving throws.. though the cleric and barbarian succeed on a second saving throw.. the cleric fails with its attack, the barbarian climbs a tree to jump onto a Harpy... Which was successful in taking down one harpy as the Barbarian yelled its name "Me Crush!!", the second harpy retreated... Though not a combat finisher, the barbarian ended a conversation with a gnome assassin who was asking for names.. Gnome Assassin says to Crush: "Now for the smelly one, what's your name." Crush taking a moment to think before replying very enthusiastically to the Gnome: "Me? Me Crush!" good times with that group |
| thecasualoblivion04-06-07, 12:56 AM | I had a climatic battle going. We had 8 PCs and my DMPC vs. this spawn of hell guy and his horde of minions. The party split up, with a few people going after the hell guy, including the DMPC, who was maximized against him with an evil slaying sword, and a few people dealing with the minions. The hellspawn didn't bleed, as they hit him bits of his flesh peeled off as he regrew it. The battle went on and on, with a few party members being knocked unconscious as the minions were dealt with. Four PCs were unconscious when the DMPC fell and they all gasped because she was dealing the most damage. The four remaining PCs fought on, losing another of their number... And then in the midst of battle, they saw a sword sticking out of the hellspawns stomach, and blood dripped from it! The DMPC, almost unconscious on the ground holding the sword sticking in the monsters back, the party threw everything they still had in an all out attack. The monster now bled, and it fell swiftly. |
