Next year for my college gaming club, I'm going to run short, one-shot adventures with prewritten modules and premade characters. These games are intended for those who are new to the hobby or those who don't have time to join a regular weekly campaign.

I want to allow a maximum of 6 players at the table. The first fours slots will be made up of the "classic" iconic adventuring party: Tordek (dwarf fighter), Mialee (elf wizard), Jozan (human cleric), and Lidda (halfling rogue). I'll be using Enemies and Allies as a guide. I was wondering what to do for the other 2 slots? Which of the other iconic characters would best fill these slots? Choices are: Alhandra (human paladin), Devis (half-elf bard), Ember (human monk), Hennet (human sorcerer), Krusk (half-orc barbarian), Nebin (gnome illusionist), Regdar (human fighter), Soveliss (elf ranger), or Vadania (half-elf druid).

In addition, if someone knows of official published stats for Gimble, Eberk, or Naull, I could potentially use those. Thanks.

I'd let the four base players a few choices. For example, the guy who is the fighter guy can pick between Tordek, Redgar, or Krusk. The arcane spellcaster picks between Mialee, Hennet, and Nebin etc. Oh - for the 5th and 6th characters I would reccomend the monk and bard, maybe the ranger. None of them really fill one of the 4 'base' slots, but are excellent 5th characters.

Bard (Devis) and Ranger (Soveliss), no doubt. Social skills and tracking, respectively. Pretty much all the others would be good too, but none of those really bring anything new to the table (that's why Vintar's suggestion is good - switch out some of the basic iconics every now and then, that'll let you introduce all the different basic types without changing party balance too much. After all, it's good to make players aware of the benefits of having all the bases covers when it comes to party composition).

That said, I very much enjoy having paladins in the party - and they are an excellent example of playing according to a character's alignment and general outlook on life. When dealing with new players, I find that a very important concept to impart from the start.

Bard, ranger and paladin all bring a bit of extra healing to the party too. That always helps.

Krusk. Just... DON'T DO NEBIN!!! he is not iconic and dervis is so much cooler than him.

Having choices (the "warrior" can choose between Tordek, Regdar, or Krusk while the "divine spellcaster" can choose between Jozan, Vadania and maybe Alhandra, and so on) sounds like a good idea to me.

Not only do they get to try out other classes from time to time, but they also get a chance to sample different races, which is also important to people learning the rules. If they see the differences between a Human Fighter and a Dwarf Fighter, they might start thinking to themselves, "I wonder what it would be like to play a Halfling Fighter..."

Of course, that's a lot of extra work, since you need to have stats for all of the iconics prepared for every game.

If I were going to add two to the "classic four" lineup, I'd go bard (either one will work, since the races don't match) and choose the last slot depending on the adventure. Lots of undead? Paladin. Wilderness? Ranger, Barbarian or Druid. Lots of magic necessary? Sorcerer or Druid. Extra combat? Ranger, Barbarian, Paladin or Monk.

Personally, I would stick the druid in the there, more magic and fighting support. If you feel you need another fighter type, bring in the paladin with high social skills to function as a party "face". If you feel you have enough fight support, go for the bard instead.

Fighter
Cleric
Rogue
Wizard
Druid
Bard/Paladin

That would be a pretty nasty party.

Me I would go with Sandharrow(Psychic Warrior), Krusk, and Devis.

Druid is pretty tough and pretty cool. I'd stick Vadania in. Bards thrive in larger parties, since their singing boosts more people, so Devis as the other choice.

If you truly want iconic, it's Devis and Nebln. How much more iconic do you get than a Gnome Illusionist? And a Half Elf Bard...that's an icon.

The BEST iconic 6-character party includes none of those you've listed. It includes the following:
Human monk/fighter
Shifter cleric
Elf ranger
Gnome sorcerer
Halfling rogue
Warforged fighter
A cookie to the first poster to name all six characters.

The fact that there are a few differing opinions here on what ones to se should give you an answer...give your players some choice as well. each slot, give them a choice of three.-Lobo13

It's a tie between Devis (half-elf bard) and Soveliss (elf ranger). I can't decide.

For the second one, it realy depends if you spend a lot of time in cities or in the wild.
City= lhandra (human paladin)
Wild= Krusk (half-orc barbarian)

I guess you could do the same to break the tie;
City= Devis (half-elf bard)
Wild= Soveliss (elf ranger)

Tordek (dwarf fighter)
Mialee (elf wizard)
Jozan (human cleric)
Lidda (halfling rogue)
Alhandra (human paladin)
Devis (half-elf bard)
Ember (human monk)
Hennet (human sorcerer)
Krusk (half-orc barbarian)
Nebin (gnome illusionist)
Regdar (human fighter)
Soveliss (elf ranger)
Vadania (half-elf druid).

I would say simply let the six folks pick from those choices. That's 13 characters for six people - plenty of selection and pretty good likely hood you'll have the four basic types covered one way or another.
