What do you think the best mount is? Give opinions.

What are the parameters of this discussion? I mean, I would think a nice huge silver dragon would be a great mount, and a griffon would be good as well. Do you mean an "all around" good mount or a good mount available to the widest variety of characters?

And to the guy out there that is inevitably going to respond to this thread with a hearty "Yo mamma!", I saw it coming a mile away and probably thought about it 10 years before you did but refrained from saying it. Kinda. ;)

Preferably one that a human fighter could use. Ones that have high parameters would be good such as dragons.

I like hippogriffs. Reasonably affordable, quick, and cool looking.

Triceratops, I just see a massive beast with full plate barding trampling over my foes while I sit nice and high on its back shooting a longbow. Also slap some barbed evil looking metal ring on its tail and string barbed wire across its horns.

Plus I'm a dinoriders fan boy.

A dino WOULD be a cool mount, now that I think about it. Good call.

Well, I think, eventhough it was alittle out there, I had A winged unicorn of legend as a paladin once.

My vote goes to the awsome Temporal Drake (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20031122a)

for a human fighter or something of that type i would say that the dino was a good call and so was the hippogriff but personally my favorite mount would be an oversized hell hound... man that would be cool!

Good ideas. Could you think of a mount that I could get before a dragon? Or something better than a dragon? My DM's crazy because he let me start off with a dragon egg:D I like the idea of the griffon and the dinos. As long as it can fly. The temporal drake sounds great. I'll just have to stop our rogue from stealing more gold from me.

For a Druid...their animal companion.

Animal advances HD and gets resultant feats and evasion.
Animal gets stat and natural armor increases with advancement.
You get bonuses to control it.
You can share spells with it. (this is a big one)

The only downside is that you'll want to wild-shape more than ride it around.

From MM III the Bloodstriker Dinosaur. Not as fast as a horse but powerful with great offense and defense and it can burrow!

Get your wizard buddy to cast Phantom Steed for you. It has an insane movement rate, can do cool things as you go up in levels like fly and walk on air, and if it dies it doesn't matter. He can summon another one the next day.

The best mount for a fighter is a wild-shaped druid. :)

A horse.

Relatively inexpensive, readily available (and replaceable), doesn't attract unusual attention ("You can't bring that [griffon/hippogriff/monstrous spider/triceratops/mammoth/whatever] in here!"), and smart enough to be trainable without having to negotiate with it everytime you want to go for a ride.

Edit: Also easy to feed and care for, plus there are stables most everywhere to fit one.

A nightmare is a very cool mount, provided you don't mind riding a fiend. They can fly, astrally project or go ethereal at will, have flaming hooves, and create supernatural smoke during combat that chokes opponents and grants concealment.

I find hydras, especially winged hydras, make powerful, if expensive, mounts.

Moreover, you could try as monsterous vermin. Very cheap, with some nifty non-evil venom.

A Great Wyrm Gold Dragon.

Can't really top that.

Arguing for the Great Wyrm Gold Dragon:

1. You can just tell everyone who says you can't bring your Great Wyrm Gold Dragon to town to just tell the Great Wyrm Gold Dragon to not come. See how many are willing to tell it not to come.

2. A Great Wyrm Gold Dragon has an INT score of 32 and an alignment of lawful good. You don't NEED to train it. I'd assume it also needs to work out, and so hopefully it doesn't have arguments against going for a ride. (Hehe, imagine it: "What? You want to go for a ride? No way! I just fed and this patch of ground is so soft..)

3. A Great Wyrm Gold Dragon will feed itself. Just tell it to go and get itself a cow or two.

4. A Great Wyrm Gold Dragon doesn't need a stable. Hell, it could just use a spell to teleport it halfway across the world if it feels cold.

A Gold Wyrm would *never* accept you as it's master, though. Such a creature would rule you, only allowing you to glean its use for a time if you can match its horde as insentive. Then, it gets bored of you and leaves you whenever it feels like.

There are advanteges to a mount with an int score of --.

Why so? Just 'cause it's smart doesn't mean it's a manipulative, arrogant snot.

I agree with this. Sure, it would be an extremely rare scenario involving an epic leveled character, but I wouldn't say it's impossible for someone who might have achieved near-divine status.

...and it WOULD be a cool mount, because "having it as a mount" precludes it "not accepting you as a mount".
