In the case of books, I recommend your friendly local gaming store. It supports the local economy and maybe people you know. If you absolutely must buy online Amazon or Buy.com is good. Even with shipping, you usually end up paying less than retail.

I don't buy the D&D minis myself, but my friends frequent e-bay for solo mini purchaes. Or they trade with each other and people at the friendly local gaming store.

If you are looking for PDF or electronic copies of books, I can't really help you out, as I have never purchased any. I like the real thing, easier to read and all that. :D Though check out Drivethrurpg.com. They may have what you are looking for.

rpgshop.com is a good place for minis, dice, and tiles

everything else go to amazon, since you apply for free shipping with just 1 book ;)

if you have a rpg shop near you, go there as you can find some good help concerning what books are good.

wizards used to have stores, but they closed them all up

www.booksamillion.com , it's got great prices, without having to worry about getting used crap from someone you don't know.
