I'm new to 3rd edition D&D. I have a group of friends who refuse to switch over to 3.5 from 2nd. We're old school and we like it. I just can't ignore how much better the 3rd edition rules are, so I've convinced my group to play online instead, so I could handle the majority of the rules and rolls.

Two Questions:

1) What's the best way to transfer characters from 2nd to 3rd edition rules?

2) What's the best online site out there where I can play with my group in a forum styled game. ( I play call of Cthulhu at callofcthulhu.org.uk and it's awesome. I'd like something similar where pictures and maps can easily be posted.

Please help me...

1) Basically, you could re-create the characters version 3.5. You keep the same ability scores. If you had a 2nd Fighter 6, then he's now a 3.5 Fighter 6. While in 2nd it was difficult to multiclass a character, you can now multiclass freely; so your fighter 6 could become a fighter 4/barbarian 2, for example. Then add skill ranks and feats according to this character style.

Also, if you have access to some non-core material, you can convert the character to another basic class. For example, if your 2nd Fighter 6 was an elven swordman, you could convert him to a Swashbuckler instead.

2) I'm partial here, but Land of the Mystic Fey (see link in my sig) is really good. But I kind of understand you want to run your own game; we usually wait a few months before allowing a new member to start his own game...

1) What's the best way to transfer characters from 2nd to 3rd edition rules?Rebuild them from scratch. There is a conversion guide, but it will give you bad results. Just take the basic idea of the character and rebuild it from the ground up in the 3e rules, you'll get a much better conversion that way.2) What's the best online site out there where I can play with my group in a forum styled game. Honestly? Don't. Start with new characters and work upward. Once you get the rules down, and if you're still interested, convert them.

For the Land of Mystic Fey site, do I have to play for a month before I start my own thread (so people get a sense of my RPG style) or do I just have to be a member for at least a month? Either way is fine. I have alot of prep work to do.

As for the starting over thing. I wouldn't mind, but the campaign I've been playing is seriously old and I advanced the characters very slowly. We strarted in the late 80's and the highest level character is 16. There is no way my group will play anything but the game we've been building since we were teenagers.

The above question is mainly for Orchomenos but any one who plays on Mystic Fey can answer me. thanks.

I'll second that on both counts.

There is a lot better stuff out there in 3.x than there was in 2nd edition. Rebuild from the ground up focusing on the same character concept and you'll probably find that you actually like your character more than you used to.

You keep the same ability scores. You could, but it doesn't really work. 2ed ability bonuses used an inconsistent system that in general rewarded only very high scores. 3.5 bonuses are a simple +/-0.5 (round down) for every point above/below 10.

The only reliable way to "convert" is:

(1) Hold the idea of your PC in your mind.

(2) Choose a 3.5 level that roughly matches your original party's 2e levels. I'd use the 2e fighter as a benchmark.

(3) Grant all PCs the appropriate XP and "wealth" for that 3.5 level

(4) Build character from scratch, remembering #1.

Thirded. I make pretty good use of it, though I somehow overlooked the ability to upload maps and such... Now to find a way to get those out of the books and onto the site... (published adventure)

Basically, yes, you need to play for around a month, or at least, long enough to show you're dedicated. The admins just don't want to let a newcomer start a game which involve 5-6 players if the DM decides the next week he doesn't like D&D.

However, if you arrive with a serious idea and an handful of players with you, this might work for you.
