| Grod_The_Giant01-29-07, 06:30 PM | this is just a random poll: what d&d expansion book is your favorite? For me, I've got to say the player's handbook 2. FOUR new base classes verses the more common one or two, a TON of useful feats, ESPECIALLY for the fighter (more then CWar, which had too many that use sneak attack), cool class varients, a bunch of cool spells AND more fluff then TWO complete books put together. |
| Herobane01-29-07, 07:56 PM | The one with pages. ;) |
| Kojiro James01-29-07, 08:03 PM | The Draconomicon. Best. Book. Ever! |
| Seeker9501-29-07, 08:32 PM | (Assuming the best other-than-core-three) General Utility: PHB II Specific Utility: Spell Compendium DM General Resource: Book of Challenges DM Specific Resource: Draconomicon Complete Resource: Complete Scoundrel My Favorite: Sandstorm Most Wanted: Undersea Resource |
| Artector01-29-07, 08:35 PM | Expanded Psionics Handbook. A very well built system with a natural feel. The slot system can be extremely awkward. Draconimicon. I loved that book, it's well written and even if you don't use any of the mechanics its still very entertaining. |
| The_Puppetmaster01-29-07, 08:41 PM | I belong to the school of thought that poor man's D&D should consist of the Big 3, the XPH, and Tome of Battle: BoNS. Between the 3.5 SRD and 30 bucks, you've got yourself one hell of a game. However, while I'm on the subject. I think all WotC books should be sold in PDF form for $5. I don't need to pay an extra $22-25 for hardcover. |
| Board_Rider01-29-07, 09:05 PM | I like the Complete Adventurer, the PHB 2 and the Tome of Battle book. I rate these on how much I use them. |
| pukunui01-29-07, 09:10 PM | My favorite is the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Psionics is such an awesome system! :cloud9: The Player's Handbook II comes in at a close second. |
| Nimbus01-29-07, 09:14 PM | I consider there to be few books better than Heroes of Horror. It's one of the only ones that tells you how to actually run a good game of D&D. |
| ornitholestes01-29-07, 11:57 PM | I belong to the school of thought that poor man's D&D should consist of the Big 3, the XPH, and Tome of Battle: BoNS. Agreed, If I had to I would even drop the monster manual before the XPH and Tome of Battle. I love my monster manual, don't get me wrong. However, I think I could make an interesting campaign with a wide variety of challenges using the races and classes in those books alone. |
| Neutronium_Dragon01-30-07, 12:36 AM | Outside of the core, I'd say the Tome of Battle (for warriors) and the Spell Compendium (for casters). The PHB2 is nice too, and comes in just behind those two. |
| Atsettam01-30-07, 12:44 AM | 1) Expanded Psionics Handbook 2) Ghostwalk Campaign Option 3) Draconomicon: The Book of Dragons |
| Xaktsaroth01-30-07, 01:54 AM | 1) Magic of Incarnum 2) Libris Mortis 3) Complete Arcane |
| pheonixfrostmourn01-30-07, 03:45 AM | 1. kingdoms of kalamar players guide: this is what the PHB wishes it could be. 2. complete book of eldritch might: all of the eldritch might books in 1 hardcover volume, yummy. 3. path of magic: best of the path of series. altho the other 3 are also awesome & better than any of the complete crap series. 4. book of erotic fantasy: most people blew this one off as a complete joke, and it is an amusing read. but there's actually some good stuff hidden amongst the nonsence. 5. tie between Dungeon and Dragon magazine: best, cost effective dnd resources available, IMO. oh, wait a minute, the OP said best WOTC book. in that case: 1. expanded psionics handbook: best psionics book in existance, IMO. 2. epic level handbook: even tho it desperately needs a 3.5 update. 3. nothing. i'm not a big fan of 90% of the garbage that wotc churns out on a monthly basis. in fact if it wasn't for the open game licence, i wouldn't play alot of 3rd/3.5 dnd. |
| Seghan01-30-07, 10:49 AM | Most of the actual use I get is out of core and the Eberron Campaign stuff, and the swell PHBII. Just to say my favs beyond simple utility though: Stronghold Builder's Guidebook: I just love this one. I find some parts of the building system a little screwy, but I have so much fun developing big buildings. And my high level characters always have cool houses. I concede strongholds can be of limited general utility, though. Heroes of Battle: A kind of a strange choice, as I don't think we have ever played with any of the rules, but someday... Sharn, City of Towers: My current favorite. Insufficiant illustrations, questionable maps, very questionable facts and figures aside; this book is by far my favorite in depth fluff description of a D&D setting. |
| JasonOrlandoHawk01-30-07, 10:56 AM | 1) Lords of Madness 2) Heroes of Horror 3) Complete Mage (Distant, distant 3rd) Can you tell that I tend towards Horror & Abberation heavy campaigns w/ a lot of Arcane power being tossed around? |
| Robert Craven01-30-07, 10:59 AM | Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. Expanded Psionic Handbook. Draconomicon. |
| MagicMouth01-30-07, 11:06 AM | Tome of Battle. The new classes and maneuver system are really cool and makes it more fun to be a melee fighter. Heroes of Horror. Interesting reading and useful tips not only for horror campaigns. Also, the crunch is far above the norm in my opinion; the Dread Necromancer is one of my favorite classes, for example. Lords of Madness. Detailed and wonderful information about the Things That Should Not Be. Additionally, I have a thing for :coolcthul. Eberron Campaign Setting. The main book for an original and lovely campaign world. Ghostwalk Campaign option. Itīs rather traditional high fantasy, but also has several unique details that makes it more interesting. |
| Zumarai01-30-07, 11:45 AM | -XPH -MoI -ToM -ToB -UA Anything with an entirely different/innovative system and I'm there. Oh, and OA. |
| mkill01-30-07, 11:56 AM | I only rate 3rd ed material here. DMG II: Useful stuff for running a campaign. WotC has a history for crappy "how to play the game" advice, this one was a nice break. Eberron Campaign Setting: I love the flavor. It's not perfect, as many aspects feel like "wait, we also need to include ____", but at least somebody spend some time trying to design a new setting that allows for a broader range of adventures than dungeon crawling and god-clubbering. Besides, Changelings and Warforged rock. Unearthed Arcana: Weird as it sounds, when I develop a new character concept I come back to this book again and again. A lot of the rules and class variants are better thought out than the PHB stuff. And now, the Worst 3: Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting: It's just too big, too high-powered, to over-developed. I understand it's fun when you used it since it came out and know every corner, but this setting carries too many years of D&D history and changed with the editions too often. Planar Handbook: I just hate what they did to Sigil, and I could cry my original Planescape stuff is unreachable half-way around the globe. Complete Divine: When I made my last cleric, I read the book from front to back, and I found zero usable material. Good PrCs? None. Good feats? None. Useful advice on how to play a proper cleric? None. Good background information to design a church? Zero. Deep thoughts on the role of religion in D&D? None. Plus, it's the book that gave us Divine Metamagic. Nuff said. |
| Stormonu01-30-07, 12:04 PM | Complete Arcane, for the sheer fact I love the Warlock, the PHB2 otherwise. |
| SenorToenails01-30-07, 12:38 PM | The Draconomicon. Best. Book. Ever! I agree. It has great material and awesome artwork. It's worth buying just to look at. Great book! |
| tryco01-30-07, 12:44 PM | Draconomicon - a very very good book. advice to everybody. Lords of Madness - i just like abberations. alot of other books are also very good. looking forward to Dungeonscape. |
| sparticus_eleisum01-30-07, 03:20 PM | Draconomicon: Great art, nice fluff, useful rules, a must have book. Libris mortis: We love to play undead heavy campaigns:) |
| nightwyrm01-30-07, 03:48 PM | Like almost everybody else, Draconomicron. Even though its topic is quite specific and the rules inside is not very player-attractive, it's still a very good read. The art is great too, especially the cute wyrmling drawings. PHBII, great expansion of the basic rules, and good character building ideas for beginner players. Unearth Arcana, awesome variant rules. |
