The PHB p 113 states that Holy Water is considered blessed, which means that it has special effects on certain creatures. Does anyone know what this means? I have looked through the PHB, DMG and various Cleric specific books searching for a definition of blessed and I cannot find one. Thanks

If a creature is affected in a special way by holy water, the description for that creature will say so.
(Generally it's 2d4 damage, if anything)

In real life, to be blessed means to be touched by God or a messenger representing God. So I assume that in the game world, a blessed object was either touched by a (good) diety, or by a claric successfully harnessing the divine touch of the diety. Likewise, a touch from an evil diety would "curse" an object.

So... yeah. 2d4 damage to undead.

I spent a good deal of time last night looking through various monstrous manuals - and I cannot find a single creature that says that it is affected by 'blessed' or 'holy' items. Do you know of any creatures that I can look at?

It just damages undead. That's how it's holy. Oh, and I'm pretty sure that it counts as a good-aligned weapon for DR cases.

Find yourself a 3.0 Monster Manual and look up the rakshasa. As best as I can recall, that's the only core creature in 3.0/3.5 that has a special entry for "blessed" weapons.

Well, a flask of holy water can be thrown as a grenadelike weapon, dealing 2d4 damage to undead and evil outsiders. These creatures take also 1 damage in a 5ft radius from the splash.

There is also unholy, axiomatic and anarchic water, which is able to damage outsiders of other alignments. Unholy water deals damage to deathless creatures, too.

I don't have my PHB with me at work, but I don't see any mention in the SRD of holy water being "blessed" (except for it being created with the bless water spell). I'm assuming it's just flavor text.
