| Seeker9504-07-06, 09:15 AM | Advantages: You get to brag to your friends that you're playing a blind PC. You are "immune" to gaze attacks and many figments and glamers. Disadvantages: You cannot see. -2 penalty to Armor Class No Dexterity bonus to AC Move at half speed -4 penalty on Search checks -4 penalty on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks. Checks and activities that rely on vision automatically fail. All opponents are considered to have total concealment (50% miss chance) A player must work out with his or her DM to have any additional benefits or remove any of the penalties. All such decisions are house rules. |

Somepeople just like to play things like that to see if they can do it. Others, mostly those who see it as a competition, never really get why you would, and look down on those who play like that. I dont mind an interesting charecter, but would never start that badly screwed up. |

One new question, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU CAUSE TO BE BLIND THEN. Quite often, a DM who allows players to play a blind character will give them some kind of advantage to compensate for the drawbacks. For example, the "flaws" system in Unearthed Arcana gives 1 extra feat for each flaw a PC takes. Being blind is worse than any of the sample flaws listed, so a DM might be more generous. For example, if a player really wanted to play a blind character in my game, I would probably give him Uncanny Dodge and Blind-fight for free. He's still at a disadvantage, but it's more like the disadvantage of playing a Kobold. Some people just like the challenge of playing something inferior. If you ever played GW's Blood Bowl (a fantasy football game with Orcs and stuff), you may have seen someone playing a Halfling team - they are much weaker than every other team in pretty much every way possible, but people still play them. |
