The Blood War is what keeps the planes moving. Basically everything important, and most of unimportant as well, is somehow linked to the Blood War.

From the fiends and the lower planes in the very heart of the battles to the celestials who secretly support their chosen sides and the neutrals who deal in arms and informations for both sides.

There's a 2e supplement called Hellbound: The Blood War which gives the best information, but information about the Blood War can be found in almost every PS supplement (with some talking less about the War than others)

... Ummm... Lemme think. Gah, my Planescape-fu is old and rusty, and was never that good to begin with. However. www.planewalker.com (http://www.planewalker.com) is the current conversion of the Planescape stuff - older books to look into include Faces of Evil: the Fiends (... and I don't even remember if that's correct), Planes of Law, Planes of Chaos, Planes of Conflict. Uncaged: Faces of Sigil (one book I actually do have...) has an amazing array of some of the players/suppliers of the Bloodwar. Finally, I don't think it's been updated in a while, but mimir.net (http://mimir.net) has some good planescape stuff. Aww, hell, I bet sooner or later Shemeshka the Marauder is gonna come along and give you and earfull. Even sooner if you repost this in either the Planescape or Manual of the Planes forums.

As I understand it, the gist of the Blood War is grounded in the supposition that evil is more powerful than good. However, the lower planes are locked in an eternal struggle (the Blood War) between law (devils) and chaos (demons) that divides their strength.

If that war were to ever be decided, the subsequent attack on the upper planes would most likely result in the destruction of the vast majority of the multiverse. That is why a great deal of effort is put forth to keep both sides balanced, and keep the war going until the end of time.

A corilary to this is that both sides are always recruiting, and always looking for new planes to conquer and stripmine for resources, equipment, magic, soldiers, etc.

In the context of a high/epic level campaign, the blood war is a great backdrop.
