Just bought BoED ( hence my posts ). Just messing about with it and saw that a monk with 18 dex, 18 wis ( not so crazy as you might think - see feats below ) could have an AC of 37+ by 8th level ( 6th monk +2LA from being a saint ).

Isn't this a bit silly??

Esp if we add dodge bonuses from race ( gnomes ) or feats ( dodge, psi dodge ), size ( small ) or other feats, spells or psi powers ( combat precog, extra nat armour etc. )

[ for those interested:

+4 unamed monk wisdom AC bonus
+4 dex bonus
+1 unamed 5th level AC bonus
VoPov + VoPeace +8 exalted AC bonus
VoPov + VoPeace +3 deflection AC bonus
VoPov + VoPeace +3 nat armour AC bonus
Saintly insight wis based AC bonus + 4 ]

you are aware that saint is a template that no PC could ever hope to hang onto?

I feel dirty just responding to this.

Playing a saint requires a lot of rolepaying and it restricts you very much. You can lose your sainthood very quick if you don't act properly

There are other ways to get silly armor class, like my Exalted Gnome Evoker proved last week:
10 base
+1 Size
+3 Dex
+12 Greater Luminous Armor (effectively)
+4 Shield
+2 Magic Circle Against Evil

32 AC by level 7. Not bad for a caster.

It is really no more difficult to stay a "Saint" than it is to remain "Exalted."

It is, however, quite difficult to become a Saint. You need two DM judgement calls - one on past behavior in genral and one on the sacrifice you make that is rewarded with sainthood.

Rereading the Saint template leads me to beleive it might bea really cool addition to our short-term Epic campaign. It would actually give my character 14 more AC from wisdom - making it 59, IIRC - possibly as early as at current levels - 20th.

Some of the powers would be duplicates, but what the heck, it's such a cool idea I think I'll propose it to my DM.

Note that this is with Vow of Peace...making him hard to hit, yes, but also keeping him from doing the types of things you would most often want to do with a Monk with a 38 AC.

And while we're looking at it, the idea of a peaceful martial artist who cannot be hit isn't all that strange.

Quite right. In fact, an excellent build for a monk is to focus on defensive things. You have to decide how that works in combat, but it is possible to be very hard to hit and very hard to affect with magic.

I think the thing that made me start this thread was the realisation that the Saint AC bonus stacks with the Monk AC bonus, basically granting double your WIS bonus to AC.

Very abusable that. A quick glance at some of the optimization threads reveals the sort of things that can be done - esp. considering that the saint is only +2LA and has an awesome array of other qualities and abilities.

First of all, I like the term "silly" in describing the situation.

Secondly, I don't think it's a bad thing for a character to be able to get a really high AC by giving up all the options and fun that such a character would have to give up.

Thirdly, the DM should be making a lot more attack rolls than the player and 1 in 20 should be an auto hit.

Be a warforged. Take the feat Mithral Laced Frame at first level. +5 armor bonus to AC. Though they get -2 to wis.

I might be incorrect on this, but doesn't mythril laced feat count as light armor? Which means that a warforged monk loses his wis to AC, and suffers ASF on his abilities?

All I know about the warforged is from Dragon, and they aren't that clear.

If you're warforged, your wearing metal armor, I don't think you can even get it removed. I guess the DM could let you take a feat to have your armor made out of wood instead of metal, or maybe just let you have it without a feat.

I beleive that the warforged +2 armor bonus doesn't count as armor if you're a warforged monk, or count as metal armor if you're a warforged druid, according to the dragon article.

I just think you can't improve the armor without it counting against druid or monk abilities.
