If given the choice would you rather take a bonus feat (a fighter feat specifically), or the ability bump at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20? Oh and the most important part, why?

Feat.

Getting a +5 to ability points compared to what feats will allow my PC to do is just not worth it. There are too many magic items that boost ability points.

Isn't it an epic boost to boost your stat by one? ;)

I don't quite get your question. How often are you getting these bonus feats/ability bumps? Is it a one off afair, or will this scenario be recurring on a regular basis?

Feats for sure.

The ability boost is nice but there are numerous ways to boost ability scores through magic items and buffs. However it gets alot harder to duplicate feats in the same way. Or any way for that matter.

Cheers :)

Make two 10th-level fighters. Put them together with the same emphasis, say focusing on sword & board. Give one fighter his two ability points. Give the other fighter two extra feats.

Discuss.

Well, for a fighter, I would say feat, because they can make fighters into total destruction machines. Who cares if your strength is 19 instead of 17, a +1 greatsword is even better. And with weapon focus, specialization, and all that, the ability is superseded. However, I think a bard might be better off with the ability, especially charisma, since there are much less magic items to help, say, Bards.

I'm kind of indifferent as between the two. On the one hand, feats are surely better at lower level, than a mere +1 to one stat (which obviously may or may not increase the bonus you receive for that stat).

That said, that +1 is an unnamed bonus and therefore stacks with everything. As an high-level or Epic character, I doubt I'd trade +5 unnamed bonus for five non-Epic feats.

Actually yeah, for a spellcaster, I'd rather have the ability points. But then, I never was much for metamagic.

No not a feat that boosts stats, I'm talking about substituting a fighter bonus feat in place of the normal bump you get every 4 levels.

In this case the option is for a fighter PC. The DM agreed to the swap, but mentioned how I might be losing out in the long run. I was curious about your thoughts.

It would really depend for me in that case. With lower starting scores I would probably want the ability raises to get high enough for some feats. If the starting scores were decent then probably the extra feats.

Casters is no question though, the ability scores would help raise the DC's for spell saves and give extra spells per day. An extra 5 points to say Int for a Wizard is going to give either a +2 or +3 depending on the starting ability. That is an extra +2 guaranteed on spell saves. Attempting that with feats requires 8 feats
