every level after you roll your HD you add your CON bonus. as I understand it, the bonus HP from CON is retroactive. i.e. if I have 18 CON at 1st level and 20 CON at 8th level the new +5 bonus. so at 8th level, instead of adding 1HD +5, I would add 1HD +12 because the HP gained from my CON bonus are retroactive. another way to illustrate this is:

18 CON at 1st level, HP = 1HD +4
2nd level HP = 2HD +8
3rd level HP = 3HD +12
19 CON at 4th level, HP = 4HD +16
5th level HP = 5HD +20
6th level HP = 6HD +24
7th level HP = 7HD +28
20 CON at 8th level, HP = 8HD +40

does anyone feel I'm doing this wrong?

You're doing it completely correctly.

The easiest way to think of it is to say that your HP total at any given level is the HP you've rolled off of your assorted hit dice, plus (Level * Constitution modifier).

In 3.5, everything except skill points and languages are retroactive. If you have 13 CON and it rises to 14, your HP total is the same as if it had always been 14. Similarly, if your INT rises from 15 to 16 as a wizard, your spells per day are the same as any other 16-INT wizard of your level.

Nope, that's exactly right.

Your total bonus to hitpoints from CON is always your CON bonus x your number of Hit Dice. If your CON bonus changes for any reason, or whenever your number of Hit Dice change, the total bonus to hitpoints chances, too.

I would however note the minimum hp for each level is 1. This can be an issue if you con is 9 or less or gets drained/damaged to 9 or less.

So if two different level 4 characters had base hit die rolls of 6, 2, 4, 3 and 8,1,1,5 and each had a -1 con mod, the first would have 11hp while the second would have 13 despite both of them rolling 15hp.

thank you, I was pretty sure I was correct, but I wanted to ask just to be sure.

A bit late, but...

To find a modifer for an abilty cut it in half and subtract 5. Round down of course.
