Has anyone heard of this Boot hill campaign setting, my older brothers told me they played it when they were young and was wondering if it was a published set or something they made up? It would have been back in the late 70's to mid 80's and it was a old west setting. I don't see them much so I would get a response here quicker then if I waited to ask them.

Boot Hill wasn't a setting, it was a game. Came out from TSR around the same time as Gamma World, IIRC.

I believe it had a different mechanics system (somewhat) than D&D. In the 1E DMG, there's actual conversions given for cross-pollinating BH, GW, and AD&D games.

Boot Hill came out in 1975. It had very different mechanics from any of the D&D rulesets.

It was more of a miniatures game with some roleplaying than a true roleplaying game.

Bought it.
Played it.
Loved it.
But it wasn't D&D.

Not so sure how much minatures were used, I played a lot of Boot Hill back in the early 80's and we never used minis. Dragon occasionally put out articles on it like stats for famous people; Jessie James, Wyatt Earp, etc...

Good game, I miss it.

You could probably fake it pretty well with d20 Modern and d20 Past.

Did you try WWW.RPGNOW.COM and see if they have it in PDF. Format?

Though it doesn't hurt to look, I strongly doubt it. The game was out of print before 1980. From what I remember, it didn't really sell well at the time.

Miniature use was integral to the game. The players probably adapted it for a more AD&D feel.

The cover title says it all:

I bought it new in 83 so it was still in print. But it did go out of print soon after and no it was not a big seller for TSR.

Not that integral apparently, we simply made conversions to movement and it worked as easily as D&D.

Back then, I wasn't interested in any other RPG other than D&D. Of course now I wished I picked it up.

Both Boot Hill and All My Children RPG. Then I'd go for the crossover.

It was a fun game.

It used a simpler variant of the top secret 1st edition rules by TSR for combat. One side was a generic map that you could turn into new mexico, arizona, oklahoma, whatever.

The other side of that map was a town, it came with a grid, and little 1/2" counters.

stats were %. Combat was %. Lethal. 7 HP was a moderate wound, 15 serious, and 21 or so lethal. No levels, as I recall.

You had to work with it, it was back in the early days when there were only 5 or 6 RPGs in print.

But it was pretty fun. Definitely had a be the best or be dead feel. Some epic stories we had.

It had a follow on second edition that used a d10, instead of d%, and skills, sort of like 2e AD&D's proficiencies. Much more solid game.

Ebay about 20 - 30 dollars most months for 1e. 2e is harder to find.

1e boot hill was pretty popular, back in the day. And a great alternative to D&D. The first really gritty / realistic, or trying to be game, other than top secret 1e.

Characters in gunfights got dead, really fast. Definitely had the flavor of the classic westerns from TV and movies.

You're better off using d20 Modern with Sidewinder: Recoiled.
