No thanks. Do you really think they could do a D&D cartoon again? I mean, take the short time a few years ago that they started doing re-runs of the original. Did you happen to catch those?

I watched one and realized "wait a tick, Dungeon Master isn't doing his original commentary at the beginning "Wizard, Ranger, Barbarian, Thief, Cavalier, and Acrobat" (might have order wrong). So I did a little research and I find out they dropped that dialogue because they didn't want to be calling Shiela a Thief, because kids would think that its "ok" to be a theif.

Now this is just a small piece of the censorship bull-$%!# that would find its way into anything they come up with. I'll keep my fond memories of the original D&D and not have them tainted by modern standards.

Hello Dusty,

Sometimes I think some parents have nothing else to do but try to :censored: everything! Parents!...It is not up to the media to raise your kids it is up to you!

I dislike parents that have children and then put them in daycare all they because both have jobs. If you are not 100% comitted to raising your children, don't have them.

Hello Waesel,

I would have to agree...and these are the same parents that try to :censored: everything that someone else does or watches on TV.

I agree with the whol parents thing too. The least you could do is hold off for 5-6 years until Kindergarten, then go back to work.

However, I believe a new set up of DnD on tv shold be done. maybe have more of an anime style approach like DragonBall Z. Have it set to play later at night so as to have more action and violence, and wicked ass plot twists. Anyone else agree or am I just another one of those lost in the dark gamers

Speaking as a parent-to-be, that's an incredibly arrogant, ignorant and thoughtless thing for you to say.

Back on topic...

The D&D cartoon was fun, but pales in comparison to more contemporary fantasy animation like Samurai Jack.

(BTW, I admit I'm not an anime fanboy - if it's not on Cartoon Network, I've probably never heard of it.)

Throwing in with Mike. We have fond memories of things we watched as children, but go back and watch some of that stuff again. It's not good . . . at all.

D&D the cartoon falls well within that category.

As a child, I thought that the D&D cartoon was the greatest show they had ever put on the air. I saw it again in reruns a few years ago. That was when I realized how different the world appears between adults and children. But then, I also though that G.I. Joe was cool when I was younger, as well.

Personally, after the crashing disappointment of Dungeons & Dragons the Movie, I'd be leery of anything that comes out of Hollywood with the D&D label on it!

i loved the D&D cartoons as a kid and when they showed them again a few years back, i loved them all over again. it didn't matter to me if those shows creaked with age or if the network censored them, i don't care.

i so wished they did the final episode, thats where venger turned out to be dungeon master's son and the kids saved him from evil.

That cartoon was sad and ridiculous. It would have been fine with any other name, but that show very ineptly conveyed only bits and pieces of D&D.

'Cause parents, network critics, and other 1980s anti-D&D groups would have welcomed a more accurate depiciton of the fantasy worlds in which we played.

You know, with the names of real Demons and Devils pulled straight from every incarnation of evil in history; pantheistic religion; spells of reincarnation, spiritwrack, and animate dead; and half-breed species as normal.

No even semi-accurate representation of the game would have survived the initial pitch as a cartoon in the 80s.

The cartoon was great, even if in retrospect it seems so, well... retro-cheesy!

I'm going to agree with Mike, that was one of the worst things I have heard on these boards. Not all parents have the luxuary of being able to stay home with their kids, currently this thing called the "economy" is in the hole in case you have not noticed.
But this is off topic and I'm sure you will come to this relazation eventually.

Now, as for the D&D cartoon. For the love of all that is sacred, do not, do NOT bring it back. Doing so would be the worst marketing ploy since that god awful movie was released. Wizards is always trying to expand to new people and catch public eye right? Well all bringing back that sad diddy in D&D history would bring back my nightmares about that horrible little unicorn. God ,that thing still gives me the jibbiles....ugh, there they go agian, the jibbilie jibbiles...

But if those old episodes were to be rerelased on DVD, redone and with some nice extras? Hell, maybe they could make a few dollars.

Hey everyone, let's keep on topic of the D&D cartoon (which is abou D&D) and not about the worthiness of stay-at-home parenting (which is not about D&D). Thanks.

What about Parenting D20? Oh, wait, that'd be on a thinktank.

I'l do my opinion mathematically. D&D cartoon < Samurai Jack. I honestly have no clue where Samurai Jack is worse than D&D cartoon... um, honestly, I think the dialogue is a bit less in Samurai Jack, but that's only because he's a quiet ginsu- erm, person.

The one thing I enjoyed about Dungeons and Dragons the Cartoon? Tahkisis/Tiamat. Honestly, that's it. Maybe. I might have forgot another reason or two.

Seen the Scourge of Worlds DVD? If they made a show out of that, I'd watch.

I hated the D&D cartoon as a child, and I hate it now. I've been playing D&D since I was 8, and even at the height of my 8 year old immaturity, I knew that show was "D&D-lite" at best.

Want a great example of a D&D cartoon? Record of Lodoss War. Now THAT is a D&D cartoon, my friend.

If you were to stick strictly to American cartoons, try watching Visionaries if you can find old tapes of it. Great show, ahead of it's time, had a lot of fantasy/D&D aspects to it.

I am a parent and I agree that being a parent is no excuse for forcing censorship on *anyone* else. I also think it's unfair to blame parents for all forms of censorship! Ahem*

The D&D cartoon was great... back in the 80's. Today, it is sadly lacking. Samurai Jack is far better.

Lodoss was a good D&D cartoon, but why did the females have to be SO ditzy? At least the females in the D&D cartoon were capable and able to use their brains and be useful, contributing members of the group.

In the D&D cartoon, it was actually the males who were the weak points of the group... Eric the scaredy-cat cavalier, Presto the ineffective wizard, and Bobby the kid. Hank was the stereo-typical strong leader-type, though.

I also enjoyed the DnD cartoon when I was young- but then better cartoons came along and ruined it for me. I was forced to look back and realize that I had been brainwashed by the glut of "Buy this toy now!" american cartoons like GI Joe.

Of course, I was then promptly brainwashed by the glut of "Buy this giant robot model now but don't play with it cuz it will break!" anime... but it was shore a lot prettier!

The D&D cartoon was great when I was a kid. Looking back on it now it wasnt good at all.

It was definitly D&D lite.

Without Dieties and Clerics its just not D&D....The movie did the same thing.

Im not foolish enough to think putting fantacy religion into a kid's cartoon is a good idea...I just think if its not really D&D dont call it that.

The movie had no excuse for watering down the D&D experiance.

Scourge of Worlds is what a D&D movie or cartoon should be like.

And for the records Samurai Jack is MUCH better than the D&D cartoon. Good cartoons are hard to come by. Old cartoons like He-Man and GIJoe are terrible looking back. And anime is crap (it looks OK but they never have good stories. Lodoss started so well and fell apart at the end)....so there isnt much good out there.

Would be much easier to make/getting funding than a film and would be able to be more trailored for fans as an audience!

Too violent? Warner Brothers is still at the top of the list for sensless destruction.

That poor poor coyote.

DBZ is just silly. D&D had them running from everything, so it was very very mild in comparison.

I agrree on the censorship issue. If you expect everyone else top raise your kids, then don't complain about the job they do.

The D&D cartoon was awesome, but the editing ruined it. Few of the episodes were aired on Fox (If memory serves.), and the Dungeon master's monologue and Venger's infamous remarks (There is no escape from the realm of ... DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS!) was attrocious.

It is better to let the show stay dead with some dignity than to have it back on TV edited down to the soccer mom level. A DVD set of the originals uncut would be awesome though.

Lodoss was a good D&D cartoon, but why did the females have to be SO ditzy? At least the females in the D&D cartoon were capable and able to use their brains and be useful, contributing members of the group.

What?! Are you talking about the TV show or Record of Lodoss War: The Legend of Crystania? Because the original OAV (The one that was just called "Record of Lodoss War" had very intelligent female characters in it. It is one of the best fantasy films I have ever seen.

I can't stand the old D&D campy cartoon, but that's a personal preference, and thus I can definitely respect someone else having a different opinion.

While I played FR, I always thought they should have had an FR series (I know one was pitched but I don't think it ever lifted even to a pilot episode). It seemed to have enough creative nostalgic properties to get a fanbase pretty quickly.

(Now, however, I find Toril to be sort of underdeveloped in an almost anachronistic sense, so I don't know if I'd recommend that world anymore. Of course, I still find it better than some of the other ones, even my originally favorite Krynn.)

No, no, no, no, no. I never saw this D&D cartoon, but I do not want to see another one, mainly because then all the evangelistic parents in our area would have something to fire-and-brimstone about, and WotC could get sued or some other catastrophe. D&D+kid's show=no. Now a show on Adult Swim with more mature undertones would be acceptable, but nothing for Saturday morning.

Okay, not really, there were still elements that sucked (such as the inclusion of Uni), but it was better than nothing and it was D&D in the mainstream media.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is a much more sophisticated cartoon built around a D&D framework, like Record of Lodoss War. You don't even have to call it D&D, but if the elements are true, the fans will know what it is. Instead of aiming it at children which, let's face it, the original was targeted at, this one should be aimed at young adults, with a few in-jokes and references that the veterans would appreciate.

I really think that this is an old and outdated argument. It held water back in the early days, but D&D has become mainstream and most of the churches and parents recognize that there are far greater evils. Sure, you still get a few anti-D&D hits from time to time, but they are much less common nowdays.

No even semi-accurate representation of the game would have survived the initial pitch as a cartoon in the 80s.

True. As an Elfquest fan, I was surprised to find out that an EQ cartoon had once been proposed for Saturday morning. Wendy and Richard pulled the deal when the networks requested some changes to the fundamental basics of the story.

"For example: the main character, Cutter, has a mate, Leetah, who is from a desert tribe of elves. She has dark skin; desert-dwellers do. The dark skin had to go; the network was uncomfortable with the idea of a "mixed marriage." Example: Cutter and Leetah have twins, a boy and girl. The girl is a real scrapper and will be chief someday; the boy is a gentle mystic. Nope, won't do. Can't have a wimpy boy character and a strong girl; change them. Leetah is a healer, she uses magic to knit wounds and heal ills. Nope, can't have that, it's laying on of hands and the Fundamentalists will complain."

And just too stay on topic, the D&D cartoon bit. Even back then I knew it sucked, but I can appreciate it on a kitsch level now. A few years ago I pitched the idea to Dragon Mag idea of writing up 3e stats for the main PCs in the series as they were then and then modern, hard-ass stats they'd have now after living in the world for 20 years, but the editor at the time (Dave Gross IIRC) thought there wasn't enough interest in it. :(

i was like 9 or 10 when the d and d cartoon was on saturday mornings. my friends and i were already gaming and we all HATED the cartoon. of course, being so young, we never understood why it was so bad.

the d and d cartoon WAS indeed a commercial for action figures. back then there was a line of advanced dungeons and dragons action figures based on (i guess) the game designer's characters. i still have a melf action figure. warduke, strongheart, and a few others made appearances in the cartoon right as the action figures were released.

I have to wonder what type of medication your parents must have had you on to think that the DnD cartoon was even remotely close to being good.

That was by far one of the worst cartoons I have ever seen. It made me ashamed to even say that I played the game. Unfortunately I think the same people that were in charge of creating that lame cartoon were then put in charge of making the D&D movie. My eye is starting to twitch just thinking of how horrible that movie was.

If anyone thinks that a FR cartoon would have been better is not thinking clearly either. Unless it is done by someone like MacFarlane, it will never be done right.

I ask, for the love of pete, that WotC do not get involved with making any more cartoons or movies, D&D has a bad enough rep without adding fuel to the fire.

The only D&D movies we will ever see with the present state of the nation (Let's face it, Hasbro wouldn't take this out of the States, especially with the outsourcing scare) are anime films from Japan, and the occassional Amerimanga Films (Though Gold Digger, which is partially inspired by D&D.. and Voltron... and Indiana Jones... and Scooby-Doo..., is the only one I know of at present). I'd sooner hold my breath for Hollywood to release a non-Cheesy 007 film.
