Am I the only one who thinks the Arms & Equipment guide was one of the most fun accessory books ever? I think it definitely needs to be updated and expanded to be brought back for 3.5. Think of all the new weapons and widgets that could go in there now!

Aurora's whole realms catalogue for 2nd edition was amazing, if they did a book like that for 3.5 instead of a book where half of it is full of animals companions and such, I'd be a happy camper

I so agree with you.

I think the Arms and Equipment Guide is a fantastic and very versatile resource and use it quite frequently.

Having a 3.5 update or continuation of it would be so useful.

Even if they produced a complete list of equipment similar to the feat/PrC lists then it would be a start, how often have you seen a magic item in a book and never used it because everything is rolled from the tables in the DMG, can you imagine how useful complete tables would be?

I wished that the 3e A&EG had been more similar to 2e A&EG. I didn't find much use out of the 3e version but would love to see a 3.5e one.

A lot of DM's sem to have a problem with the A&EG. Not only because it is 3.0, but because of things like the balanced enchantment, dastanas, sparring dummy of the masters and those Hive-mind items etc.

Aside from dastanas, I personally dig it.

What's so wrong with the dastana's?? Personally I think they were a nice piece.

I'd agree...but with the new page size limit, and the new magic item format...we'd get about half, or a third, as many items as the original Arms and Equipment Guide.

Because it goes against one of the fundamental rules of the game - bonuses of the same type don't stack.

Why should dastanas be so special as to provide an armour bonus, that some how stacks with the bonus from "light armours"...lame IMO.

The only thing any PC would ever wear would be a chain shirt and dastanas.

The chain shirt is already amazing enough as it is.

I strongly suspect Dastanas were introduced in an effort to reduce squishiness of all those dress-wearing classes... And I agree, they're a bit weird. I personally introduced a house rule that Dastanas require Feat : Exotic Armor Proficiency to be used - since there's a plenty of Light exotic armors good for squishies, it's not like it's an one-shot-wonder feat. After all, as I see it, Dastanas are relatively heavy metal bracers used for deflecting blows. For that, one has to be ready to stick his seemingly unprotected arm in the way of an incomming blow... which goes against natural instincts. So... you have to know how to use it. (After all, using plain shields is far easier, yet they do require proficiencies.

I'd also happily welcome a new A&EG with much items - and they do not have to be so powerful or weird like from distant planes - I'd like a focus on those things that'd cost between 0-5000 Gp

I dunno about you, but if someone's trying to hit me, with anything, I'm going to try to dodge. If I cant dodge, or if I try and it isnt good enough, I'm going to block with my arms before I just let someone hit me in the head, or the kidneys.

maybe I dont have any instincts or something, though

I'd love to see an updated/expanded book. I love my 3E one (my fighters don't use greatswords, they use zweihanders) and have got many interesting characters out of it. (Paladin with a lucerne hammer. :D)

I was just going to agree that dastanas are one silly thing in the book until you said that. That's a pretty good idea! Now you have the word "squishy" stuck in my head though.:tantrum:

Your friend is my kinda guy. Why cast a spell when you can pull a Mary Poppins and have what ya need? If only you could get 'panst of holding', though, or a 'huge afro wig of holding.' That would be sweet.

Well, some of the enhancements made it to 3.5 core books if that says anything. Yeah, I would like some other weapon options and it would be REALLY helpful if they could provide us with some better ideas for wonderous items because I find myself not allowing things that are actively weaker than what WOTC produces for magic items. So some sort of guideline would be helpful.

There's no such thing as too many items, but what I want is an entire book of mundane equipment and special materials... MAYBE a few pages of new item enhancements, but primarily just regular 'ol mundane equipment.

Why limit yourself that way? Wondrous items... maybe weights and such... but really with very little thought you aught to be able to figure out weights and prices.... and when it comes to rules, use some common sense and the 0 rule.

Nazi Style DM's excepted of course.

It's easier to come up with a wonderous item than it is to come up with an entirely new item period. You just figure out if there's a spell that's similar to what you want the item to do or provides the same sort of bonus you want to provide, and just go off of the modifiers given to item creation costs in the DMG.

No, it's much harder to make balanced mundane items than wonderous items... When you're making a mundane item, 9 times out of 10 it's to do something that the game system doesn't already have a benchmark for, or if it does, it could be like how there's a 1st level Mystery for Shadowcasters that lets you see as though you were standing somewhere else within your current line of sight. So is using a Periscope game-breaking because it lets you see around corners as much as you want without blowing a spell slot? Of course not, but the Spells As Services cost chart doesn't help when pricing a periscope, nor does the wonderous item creation chart for wonderous items that replicate a spell's effect on an at-will basis. You could take the prices for two small steel mirrors and add in a couple GP for materials and labor, but that means the price could be anywhere from 5 GP to 100GP, which is a freakin huge difference at level 1.

I agree that rule-wise it can be tricky to create totally new items, but statting them out usually insn't too hard. You mentioned a periscope. A presicope is two mirrors in a tube. So let's see, 2 small steel mirrors, 2 scroll cases, fitting, workmansip, small profit margin...I'd say a periscope would cost about 25gp and weigh 3 lb. That would be a small, fairly crude presicope, with a small field of view. Basically it would let you see while retaining your cover, but with major penalties to spot and search checks.

06-07-06, 04:31 AM
Oh it's not that it's not easy to do... it's just that making wonderous items is easier. If given the choice between having more mundane items and more magic items, I'd go with more mundane items every day. :P

It would be great if they remade it

however there would be a few things that I would want added

especially materials (did you notice that armor had way better ones)

I'm sure a periscope is in one of the 3E books, maybe song and slience.

However, why waste all that money on buying a periscope when you can just use a mirror to look around corners.

Its even in the 3.5E description.

I personally as a DM and a PC, don't use the Arms and Equipment guide due to the fact that it is 3.0, and as mentioned above, has some balancing issues in my opinion. But once they come out with a new updated version I will buy it in a sec, the one for ADnD was awesome.

Fullblade sword. Dual Wield.

Nuff said my friends.

Also, I need to read through it again, Zweihander sounds pretty spiffy, for shizzle.

I <3 Arms Guide. Best book ever.
