| Squirrelloid07-24-06, 11:10 PM | Premise 1: There is a class (student) which is exactly like expert except it gets all knowledge skills in-class + any 10 others and 8+int skills per level. All people gain 1 level of student for each year of grade school, 2 levels per year of college (ok, this should really be by credits - 8 levels for a 4 year degree), and graduate education is epic levels. People who stop school start picking up levels of expert, aristocrat, commoner, or fighter/warrior as appropriate to their profession. So a police officer would get warrior levels, but a soldier would get fighter, a salesman expert, a politician aristocrat, etc.... Me Human Student level 26 (starting 4th year of graduate school) Strength: I can carry ~50lbs of gear pretty easily. I can bench my weight (~160lbs) without too much difficulty. That puts my strength in the ballpark of 13-14. Dexterity: I've got good hand-eye coordination, am decently graceful, and an experienced ballroom dancer. I'm guessing ~15 dexterity. Constitution: I'm rarely sick, and have fairly good endurance at games like soccer. I was a 400 runner in high school. I'm guessing 14. Intelligence: Ok, 10 is average intelligence, which we can imagine is average (100) IQ. Every +-2 is a change of +- 10 IQ makes sense. This makes my Int at least 20. Wisdom: I can be very absent-minded. But i'm reasonably socially aware. I'm going to chock that up to skill points and put myself down for an 8 wisdom. Charisma: I'm a reasonably good orator, having done lincoln douglas debate, policy debate, parliamentary debate, extemporaneous speaking, and a few other speech events in high school and college, and did well in them. But i'm not James Bond. I'm guessing around 12-14. S 13 D 15 C 14 I 20+ W 8 C 13 Ok, I'm a 26th level human student, so i have 8 feats and 4 epic feats (2 bonus epic feats for epic student, ie +1/3 levels). | JulesCARV07-24-06, 11:45 PM | Strength: I think I can benchpress about 100 lbs. So that means my maximum heavy carrying limit is 50 lbs, so 5. Dexterity: Meh... not too flexible. 8 Constitution: Average. 11 Intelligence: Only know one language fluently, so no modifier greater than +0. 11. (I'd say I have about half a rank in speak language (French) Wisdom: I tend to miss things a fair bit (my sense motive modifier is bad). 8. Charisma: Not so charismatic. 8. So, with a point buy system where stats below 8 are allowed, and they cost -1 per point below 8, I'm a 3 point buy character. I want a re-roll. |

| Solaris07-25-06, 01:47 AM | Intelligence: Ok, 10 is average intelligence, which we can imagine is average (100) IQ. Every +-2 is a change of +- 10 IQ makes sense. Depends on the IQ test. Standard deviation of 3d6 is 2.95. Standard deviations of two common IQ tests are 15 for Weschler and 24 for Cattell. So probably you'd be looking at 1 for 5 (as you said), or 1 for 8, respectively. Of course the new crowd will never believe that the ability scores of the general population are supposed to be distributed as 3d6 ("But we roll 4d6 and keep 3 for characters!"); and there'll be arguments about whether or not Int can be fairly said to be represented by IQ; and then there's my favorite, "But I like multiplying by 10 better!"... |

Uncaring for alliances and politics above, he instead impresses upon his followers the need for constant protection of the land and honour in service and duty. He is a stout combatant and woodsman, often depicted as a tall man with tied back hair and a fiery goatee. Dogma Cults to Marcus Thriceborn thrive in areas on the borders of the frontier, and many individuals who roam the wildlands that find themselves in need of civilization pray tribute to his temples. Clergy work in the fields or guard sensitive plots of land from being spoiled, as well as functioning as bodyguards for important figures of the natural world. Clergy and Temples Marcus Thriceborn's clergy have almost two functioning factions. One preserves the land and is generally comprised of farmers and druids who have found the calling in his church, while the other half protects the lands and deals death to those who threaten it. Both are trained well in warfare, though only the latter half appear armed at all times. It is very rare to find a temple to him within the borders of true civilization, but not completely unheard of. Those of the Red Lady are welcome in the temple with open arms, as well as any who are freely wishing to learn. However, if hospitality is taken advantage of, it is well known that the Order exacts its payment efficently and quickly. | Solaris07-25-06, 10:01 PM | So.. you're saying my intelligence is 23? funny, the test said 16.Then the test wasn't doing a statistical identification of Int and IQ. Or your IQ isn't that high due to the test being bad, or having been taken when you were young, or other reasons. Or your particular test had a standard deviation that wasn't equal to 15. Or... But if your IQ is 165 (on some scale), and it gave you 16, I guess it just divided by 10 (which would be wrong for any scale). |

| Archmage_Vall07-25-06, 11:27 PM | Then the test wasn't doing a statistical identification of Int and IQ. I was using the theory that each 15 points (1 standard deviation) on the IQ scale is a +1 of INT modifier. So... | Squirrelloid07-25-06, 11:30 PM | 16 is extremely bright, but 23 is downright superhuman intelligence. Even Einstein, DaVinci, or Steven Hawking probably fall short of the mark. Assuming 10 is average, and SD are based on the SD of 3d6, then 23 isn't really excessive. I mean, there are people with IQs over 190. (Which comes out to 28 int under that system). I say my int is at least 20 based on this method because i haven't taken an IQ test sensitive enough to discriminate IQs higher than 150. So i know mine is 150+, but i don't know what exactly. (Basically, for every +-1 SD away from the mean, the test requires a substantial increase in the number and difficulty range of the questions in order to identify your IQ, and for 99.8% of the population, discriminating 50-150 is sufficient.) So it could be 150, or it could be more. I doubt its 190+ because i'm not that socially inept (most people with IQs that high are). But so there it is. Just because you don't know any such people (i mean, we're talking 1 in a million sorts of people) doesn't make it 'superhuman', just extremely rare. And of course, i'm making the assumption that int = IQ, but given the types of things its related to in D+D (skills, languages, and knowledge skill bonuses), IQ seems a reasonable proxy especially as its the only int related thing we have a way to measure. |
| Zheon07-25-06, 11:46 PM | what happened to this being a "make you as a character" board? come on! you guys making the intelligence versus IQ charts. i bet you guys are wizards! so get posting your spellbook contents. :P |

| Daiben07-26-06, 05:37 AM | the problem with is that the D&D system doesn't come close to accurately portraying real people. In real life high achievers tend to come from one of two groups, those who are naturally gifted either physicall or mentally (eg high stats) and those who are mearly above average but work their arses off to get to the top (eg lower stats but higher skill levels). In D&D though a character with lower stats is generally inferior to someone with good ones which is not true of real life. I lucky to be naturally gifted, I've achieved high results both academically, in my career and as an athlete. However there are plenty of people who outperform me easily by the fact that they had the potential/ability to develop much higher skills levels. D&D lacks any representation of this. |

Many of my friends would probably say I actually have higher than 16 in strength, but in my own opinion I'm not as strong as they think I am, most of the "impressive" things I've done related to strength that they know about were more about moving and carrying things...I think maybe I have some feat roughly equal to Dwarven ability of carrying capacity.
