Hi everyone,

I'm going to be running the Burning Plague adventure to kick off a campaign soon. However to better tie the adventure into the campaign, I was going to replace the Kobolds in the mine with Goblins. However the two have different CRs. The creatures are supposed to have contracted the burning plague, which lowers their constitution by 1d4 points. What would the CR be for a goblin who's constitution had been lowered in that way? The adventure is here on the wizards site, so if anyone is generous enough to look at converting some of the encounters for me so thay are the same CR, that would be really appreciated too.

Thanks

Hello there, I've played in (though not DMed) the Burning plague module, and I've got to say there's no particular need to adjust the CR of the encounters. First, Kobolds and Goblins have very similar stats, and second their CR is so low that it would not be sensible to lower it further despite the disease. A Goblin is actually bit tougher with a CR 1/3, while kobolds are CR 1/4, so you could increase the CR or exp for the goblin fights by one-third if you want to reflect that. A horde of Kobold/goblins (especially if they're prepared) can actually be reasonably tough opposition for a 1st level party, reardless of the CON penalty, and given that they are no major mechanical differences between them I wouldn't adjust the CR down. Have fun!

An easy solution that will save you a refit could be to rename the kobolds goblins and keep the same stats i.e. same CR.

Just a change in flavour...

Oh, one thing that can make the last fight with the orc more interesting is to keep that cleric on the ledge of the piller just round the corner - cast hold person on the first person up, push them into the water to drown or use them as a melee shield (only room for one up at a time). Cast darkness on himself so archers can't get a shot.... use bullrush to good effect.. Stay on the ledge and you limit the partys ability to fight back. Drove my players nuts heh..
