I'm not familiar with how the buy point system works. Could someone explain it to me?

Easy enough. It's best done by example, if you get NeverWinter Nights, the Computer Game, you can create a character via Point buy that will show you basically how it's done.

In essence though, if you have 8 points, then you could add one point to a score of let's say, a base of 7 (not what it states in the books, this is only an example, also, since it's not the number in the books, I'm trying to avoid any CoC violations) then adding one point would make it 8, and leave you with 7 more points to distribute amongst your other scores.

Now at some point it's going to cost you more, let's say for our example, anything above 10 will cost you 2 points instead of one.

So in our example...let's say I add 3 points to the score making it 10 (and leaving me with 5 points left) but want to raise it even more to twelve. Those next two points cost 2 of my bonuses left...hence I would have 12 points in my stat (but only 1 point left to add to any of my other stats).

Trying to hopefully clarify it some.

It's quite simply.. you start with a certain amount of points (typically 25 but can also be up to 32 or more). Each ability has a starting score of 8 (i.e. 0 points to have a score of 8 in any attribute). From there, the points cost is as follows:

9 = 1 pt
10 = 2 pts
11 = 3
12 = 4
13 = 5
14 = 6
15 = 8
16 = 10
17 = 13
18 = 16 points

Purchase scores for each attribute until you have no more points left and, viola! Point buy. :)
