Buying and training cheetahs [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-02-07, 01:39 AM How much would it cost to purchase a Cheetah and how much to train? Is there a book that lists this? What would the price be for a dire cheetah to serve as a mount?

But I don't know what it would cost for an NPC to this, but it would cheaper if there are warm plains near by.

Oh and cheatahs are medium, so you can't mount it unless your a gnome or haflling.

That's why I said the mount would be a Dire Cheetah, so that I could ride it.

05-02-07, 04:50 AM You might find some decent guidelines in the Arms & Equipment Guide. In general, training cat-like animals is harder than dog-like ones, as cats have a much more loose social structure.

05-08-07, 06:54 AM I can't find anything in the arms and equiptment about cheetah pricing so can someone give me a rough price estimate on what it might cost if you were the DM? Something fair but not excessive?

05-08-07, 07:16 AM For the record, cheetahs are dog like animals, even if they are cats. People have been using them as hunting animals and pets in both Africa and Asia for thousands of years. In fact, the practice has only died out in the last hundred years or so. Some folks classify them as semi-domesticates like horses and house cats, in that they can function in the wild, but are most successful in captivity. This is one of the reasons sited for there having a harder time succeeding compared to most of the African big cats.

In game terms, I would say that they are an exotic animal (unless the campaign is set near an afro-asian like step), and a +1 to 5 bump to the training DC's, as compared to a dog. If raised from a cub/kitten/pup, I would use the DC for a dog, without modifiers. I do not know off the top of my head how the dire template would effect things though.

05-08-07, 04:47 PM If you apply the Warbeast template (from the Monster Manual II) to a cheetah, that will give you a purchase price. The price is based on HD, IIRC. Unless it's in a book I don't know about, there is no Dire Cheetah, but a dire animal template exists at this site (http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted/view_t.php?TemplateID=22).
