| Ravan07-01-05, 09:09 PM | Hey I'm DM for a forgotten realms based Campagin and looking for some great background to spice up the feeling of the game. Have any suggestions for what music to use? Also whats your favorite music to play D&D to? |
| Iron Cobra07-01-05, 10:06 PM | We should sticky this topic as a thread, it comes up pretty frequently... Diablo II / Diablo II Lord of Destruction Chrono Cross Castlevania Prince of Persia SOT and WW |
| BeyondFated07-01-05, 10:13 PM | I find that music detracts more than adds. For one, you need to find/put in the CD, and then stick to the track you want. Second, none of the songs last long enough, and I don't want to repeat the same one for half an hour. I also don't waat to halt combat so that I can skip to another song. But those are just my thoughts... |
| Caterane07-02-05, 05:55 AM | I'm no Heavy Metal Fan but our DM once brought Metallica or something like that and played it in a fight vs a Nightwalker. That was really atmorspheric! Else, Diablo music and soundtracks from D&D and DSA (Das Schwarze Auge) computer games. |
| Ringmereth07-02-05, 12:52 PM | The soundtracks to Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, and Planescape Torment are all pretty decent ambient music. There are plenty of good movie soundtracks out there, and a dose metal makes for a good background to some encounters. On the whole, however, I find that they distract from the game more than they add to the atmosphere. |
| Woas07-02-05, 02:00 PM | I don't really use music. If I did, I'd probably use video game music, like Legend of Zelda and Secret of Mana stuff. Also, I'd probably play some Chemical Brothers songs. |

| Iron Cobra07-02-05, 06:05 PM | Anyone interested in great remixes or original work, feel free to IM me on AIM or MSN. Yahoo users, message me and i'll get online |
| Thrak07-02-05, 06:18 PM | Dude, thrash or death metal works great in my adventures. Really good for hardcore fighting. |
| Inquisitor Ylodias07-02-05, 06:34 PM | The Midnight Syndicate, all the way, but the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings works fine as well. Gotta love that gothic music! |
| babysamurai07-04-05, 09:50 AM | I also think that music detracts, more than adds to a session. I usually just wait till we have a break, and then play some Steely Dan or Buckethead. |

Meanwhile, without some mood music, I can't play... well, I can play, but I can't get into roleplaying and I generally find the entire game to be dull and unrewarding if I'm not roleplaying well. |

Why do you need music to roleplay well, most stage actors manage without background music. The game being dull and unrewarding has nothing to do with the presence of, or lack of music. I love music, that's why I have been a musician for 17 years, but when it comes to another artform such as roleplaying/acting (my fathers an actor) there is no absolute need for music. They can compliment each other well, but they are not dependant. |

Don't assume everyone has the ability to just strap on a random persona and utilize it to it's full believability. Just because Anthony Hopkins can create genius performances doesn't mean that I, a random 23 year old boy, can flicker back and forth between my own personality and that of a half-elven swordswoman at the drop of a hat. And did I ever say you needed it? I said I (operative word being I, not everyone else in the world who plays, and certainly not you) needed it, and that I need a little something to get in the roleplaying mood. Without a some sort of ambience, I'm basically just sitting in my living room rolling dice, and I can't get into what is going on- and if I am not roleplaying well, THEN the game is unrewarding and unfulfilling. Perhaps that would make me seem unimaginative, but frankly I don't care. So stop putting words in my mouth, all I was doing was pointing out that mood music doesn't always detract because some people enjoy it- myself and everyone I have played with find it to a be a staple of playing. |

Relax killer. |
| jukar07-04-05, 11:43 AM | Relax killer. Sorry, I just got a little irked. All I was doing was offering a counter-point, YMMV sort of comment, and your response felt a little invalidating, that's all. Like you said, they aren't dependant, but they can compliment each other nicely. I also like to use different kinds of lighting and scents to create moods, too. People respond and react to different sensory inputs, and I like our sessions to be as immersive as possible for everyone. |

I'm sorry too, if it came across that way Aromatherapy, now there's an idea. |
| jukar07-04-05, 11:58 AM | I did not mean to inalidate your response. I'm sorry too, if it came across that way Aromatherapy, now there's an idea. The aromatherapy stuff is neat, if not a little limited. It's mostly only used for certain situations- for example, in our current campaign, on of the character has a regular relationship with a muse (DR 6 art goddess), and whenever she appears, we'll light some white rose incense. There are some other examples, but they are fairly limited. I would like to find more uses for it, but even if there were a way to emulate, oh say, a ghoul's stench, who would want to fill their house with it, even for the sake of roleplaying? Not me, for one. |

But those are just my thoughts... It’s unfortunate for you that your thoughts are so limited in scope. It astonishes me that a person capable of using a computer to post to a message board – certainly not the most complex task in the world, but at least one that implies a degree of tech-friendliness – would be so incapable of seeing anything other than the scenario you have outlined. |
| Slumbersigh07-04-05, 12:12 PM | I also think that music detracts, more than adds to a session. I usually just wait till we have a break, and then play some Steely Dan or Buckethead. Based on the musical selections you have noted in this post, I can only imagine that the music you prefer would detract not just from a session of Dungeons & Dragons, but from every single activity conceivable. Naturally music only serves to make the situation worse when one chooses (and of their own free well, no less) to subject themselves to such rubbish. Being forced to listen to Steely Dan would make winning the lottery less enjoyable, and might make me inclined to give away the ticket altogether if only to make the music stop. All this said, Iron Cobra has the right idea. Why the mods here have yet to sticky this subject, which comes up at least once a week, and often two or three times simultaneously, is something I am unable to understand. |
