| ImagoKid02-16-05, 12:41 AM | Hey! I have a question about a campaign I want to run using material from the book Races of Stone. I was about to put in on the races boards, but it has more to do with the actual campaign, so here it it. I want to have one of those "campaigns of stone," and the players are all gnomes, goliaths or dwarves or subraces. Where should I set my capaign? Should I focus all of my adventures around just one mountain with valleys on each side? Or should I perhaps set it on a big world but just not include anything that doesn't have to do with RoS? How should I design the adventures? What kind of adventures should I include in my campaign? Urban? Wilderness? Dungeon crawls? In depth story telling episodes? Please help, ImagoKid |

What would you not normally think would be in a "stone campaign"? Following the stone theme in an interesting/novel way avoids it being worn out too quickly. It could be a piece of mountain range or almost completely underground (underground lakes; cities carved into inverse-mountain structures powered geothermally; a root forest made from humongous surface plants reaching down; big, metal ships that either use passwall or machine to sail underground), to avoid leaving it too early, you could have new tunnels break open or be burrowed as new places become available, you could make it surrounded by desert or ocean or sky (floating mountains?). You could make it a desert with a wall of glass at the "Ends of the World"...I think I've seen that in a movie a while ago..."The Neverending Story" maybe? Maybe Moradin has a workshop at the center of the world. PS: as to adventure design, what does the play group (including you) want? Don't be afraid to try new things too tho'. If you have a lot of interesting & varied places & things to do in your setting, things should come. I'd suggest designing a few of each unless some are generaly abhorrent to you & the players. |

You could base an entire campaign in the Lortmil Mountains of Greyhawk, and still manage to include every kind of adventure type out there. Use the valley, the swamp, the mountains, the forested foothills, and even a town or two. Just strip out the humans in the town. And by the way... this idea sounds fun! |
