Establish enough details for the location to let them move around freely and interact with the NPCs there. As you go, develop out the setting more. Establish nearby cities or political entities. Give the location some rival and competing regional powers. Next, give them some insights to the general region, which includes different cultures, cities, and outside influences. You don't need much more then that. -Steve |

Until then, it's a vague description. There are "Dwarves in the mtns to the west, elves in the woods, orcs to the north, a couple of counties and baronies nearby," and that's about it kind of thing. Or use this map here (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=685246) or here (http://www.cfrq.net/~rolemaster/fiverivers/archives/maps/elsir_vale.shtml). :D There's even a big 4 page handout version of it , but you have to sign on to enworld to get access to the zip file (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=891340) containing it. | toucanbuzz12-10-07, 12:33 PM | Agree with the prior posts. The worst thing you can do is spend hours upon end making up a world, political figures, ecology, eating habits of the trolls of Smegor Fen, and then find out the first level party is only concerned with where they can get a hot meal and sell this weird ceramic egg they found in the kobold's lair. Keep it simple. |
| theblackpiece12-10-07, 04:27 PM | Thanks! i think ill just start afresh like you guys said, man i havent played in forever though, like 1 or two yrs... |
| Subversive12-10-07, 04:42 PM | It's also going to depend somewhat on what lvl your group is starting at, but if they're getting in at a low level or lvl 1, then I really don't forsee a problem with just getting them the basics of the setting ready. -Steve |
| EaterOfTheDead12-14-07, 11:48 AM | Like others have already said, start small and build out from there as needed. Check out the link below for the Dungeoncraft article posted recently about doing this very thing. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dudc/20071019 |
