Do you, as players, and as DMs, prefer campaigns or adventures?

I am sure a lot of you will say, 'well, both, really. I like a campaign but every now and then an adventure that has nothing to do with the storyline'. Please avoid such comments. I am interested in whether or not you like building a character from level one, and growing with the character, be part of something epic and letting yourself be fully immersed in the world that D&D can provide; have fun, build friendships, kick the BBEG's ass and really get into it, or, if you like 'quickies', that is, get an adventure, either use a pre-made character or create a mid or high level character and not really be concerned about the bigger picture.

As a DM i prefer campaigns every time. I just love the world building. My friends and I are about to start our 2008 campaign using 3.5 rules from 1st level. We're all late 30s early 40s and have been playing D&D since it started. These days what with work and kids it's almost impossible to get together and play regularly but we are going to try at least a once a month session all year and see how far we get...

We always start with the intention of it being a campaign but sometimes it ends up as a couple of adventures. In the end though, despite being easier time-wise, one off adventures just don't have the same appeal. Here's to the long haul

Definately campaigns for me. Two notable standouts were the Slave pits-Giants-Drow-Lolth campaign from 1st edition and the Bloodstone Pass series featuring Orcus. Very nasty stuff.

Good times...

Campaigns.

In a campaign you can always add an adventure.

In an adventure, it is mighty difficult to add an entire campaign.

In a campaign you have the ability to go anywhere - in an adventure, if the group doesn't walk up that hill, your Tomb Of Horrors adventure is pretty much over.

A campaign is much more enjoyable, to me and my players.

I agree with everyone here. My groups adventures have been deteriorating lately, mainly because of the lack of story. We aimlessly slaughtering goblins each session and it gets boring very quickly. Campaigns are more fun and interesting for sure, the few times they work out well.

That said, it takes a good, dedicated DM and some interested players for a campaign to work. Not to say it isnt better but it is also definately harder.

Boy, your opinion doesn't come out in the question or anything, does it? ;)

I like campaigns. My husband and I role play often and it would be cumbersome to have to make new characters all the time. And if I play one character in numerous adventures I tend to start thinking in campaign terms anyway.

With my kids we are just starting out with the basics, so we aren't really campaigning yet. I am sticking to low level pre-mades and easy stuff while they get their feet wet. Once they have a handle on things we'll start "real" role playing (campaign).

I have no idea which i prefer, because in a year and a half of playing D&D i have never been part of a campaign. My gaming group once had three connected adventures, and that was pretty cool, even though i had to make a new character each time cuz i kept dying. So if I had to take a guess, I would say that I like campaigns more.

Campaigns for sure, though I haven't really been a part of one for a long time. My gaming group is pretty un-motivated save for one other player so we usually end up having to roll up new characters every session, which I'd rather not do as I've liked a few of my past ones but never gotten a good chance to play them...

Campaigns for sure, I like the individual mods once in a while for a break from story and we go dungeon crawling and goblin bashing :)

I know you said to avoid the answer of "both". But, since it's true, that's what you're getting....

The thing is that when I DM the words adventure & campaign are interchangable.
See, I rarely have any pre-formed story/overall arc prior to begining play. So what I have is a beginning, but no set middle or end. Wich seems to be the criteria most of you use in determining wether your playing an adventure or a campaign....
Typically we'll decide which setting to use & the players create thier characters within certain preset paramiters. Then I'll look them over and write up the introduction adventure. Beyond that I simply write in response to what the players are doing. This results in a mix of shorter & longer arcs. Some intertwining, some not. Some of wich could be thought of as campaigns in thier own right.

When I'm a player I tend to prefer a game that runs in a similar fashion.
I don't want to run pre-gen characters week after week. Nor do I want to roll up a character again and again.
But at the same time I have no patience to sit through what amounts to a single giant linear plotline - wich is what many a "campaign" really are. Where the DMs already blocked in the overall story & all that's really left blank are the exact details - heroes name/class, etc. I don't play the interchangable hero well. Since the story getting told is at least 1/2 ours (parties), it will need to accomadate us & our whims. So there'd better be a mix. Because I am the player that'll set personal goals &/or abitrarily choose a spot on a map & then attempt to explore it....

I totally prefer campaigns, both DMing and PCing. I love watching the characters grow and change over the course of time, often in surprising ways.

But, but, but. . .

I need the throwaway adventures in-between to blow off steam. Otherwise the pressure to keep up with the storyline can be a little overwhelming. It's good, sometimes, to have a PC you can just fling at dangerous situations.

Takes the edge off, y'know? :D

My guys aren't hardcore role players and the first run through from 1st to 11th level playing not-very-coordinated series of adventures was ok.
But now that I'm running Red Hand of Doom they are *extremely* into it. So I guess a well run campaign beats adventures anywhere everywhere any day of the week, twice on sundays.

Campaigns, never saw the point of making a character if you aren't planning on playing it for months (or years, if s/he lives).... You can toss some 'adventure' sidequests into a campaign at any time, but never could get into them as stand alones

Campaigns, always.

As long as the DM is good, for me, it's better than TV and most movies.
