06-23-06, 11:51 AM My animal campanion is trained with the heel trick.
Would a heel check keep my animal campanion (wolf) at my side when I board a boat or ship? My dm says I need the come trick trained.

06-23-06, 01:47 PM A handle animal check DC15 should suffice to keep it near you, it would be the the "come" trick that would guarantee it to approach you, but the "heel" is more like a follow trick.

Bonus Tricks: The value given in this column is the total number of “bonus” tricks that the animal knows in addition to any that the druid might choose to teach it (see the Handle Animal skill). These bonus tricks don’t require any training time or Handle Animal checks, and they don’t count against the normal limit of tricks known by the animal. The druid selects these bonus tricks, and once selected, they can’t be changed.

Come (DC 15): The animal comes to you, even if it normally would not do so.

Heel (DC 15): The animal follows you closely, even to places where it normally wouldn’t go.

No check needed in the given scenario.

06-23-06, 04:19 PM Maybe so, but "heel" has always been synonomous with "sit" or "down" to me. Good to know what it is actually intended to mean, perhaps now it will skew my opinion in favour of the word.

Heel covers sit and come and down when the location is immediately next to the owner.
Sit can be given as a command wherever the dog happens to be.
Come is given when the dog and owner are separated by a distance.

(We are currently training our newly acquired ten-week old peekapoo, Spirit.)
