If your DM says so

In my game, sure.
Especially if I need another NPC.

DM: Your low-level PC becomes a god.
Player: Cool! What do I get?
DM: A blank character sheet.
Player: What's this for?
DM: Your new character. Start rolling.

Really, How do they become one in a low-level?

Basically to become a god.. you need people to not only follow you but worship you....

A PC could gain Hero status easy (practically known as Epic level) then the next step is accession where you become a demi-god.. which is very dangerous since the only avatar you have is you. So unless you have a worship base of near lesser, I wouldn't try it.. But then again if people worship you, you can't stop gaining power.. Its almost like the Mist of Ravenloft or the Mob (in our day) they want you they will take you.

Really, if your DM says so.

There's no fixed rule

There are half-assed rules for gods.

There are no explicit, definite, purely mechanical ways to achieve divinity, though.

As we all know, the DM can do anything. In this case, these is no default method, so the ONLY way to become a god is for the DM to make up something himself (this is as it should be). In that context, it's strictly up to the DM to decide whether levels matter or not.

* - I say "half-assed" because, while they look very intricate and specific, most of them are actually just saying "Meh, you can do whatever the hell you want," and because gods are effectively unplayable for PCs (I don't mind) and, well, let's face it, if you have a bunch of mortal PCs interacting with an NPC whose stats say things like "knows everything that will happen N weeks into the future" or "can kill with a thought," the stats are pretty darn moot.

If you could kill a god, you could assume his/her/its portfolio and take its place. Though I can think of no situation in which a god would allow that to happen. :thinks:

A god of god-slaying may command that he be slain by his worshippers. Just off the top of my head.

A low level character can indeed become a god.

This character is known as Pun-Pun. I hear tell that they eventually get it down from a 12th level psion to a 6th level wizard.

There's no fixed rule for attaining divinity; you don't reach level 60 and say 'woo-hoo, I'm a god!' even though you may rival one in power, you're still not a literal god.

Although divinity in D&D I've always found funny, because for the most part in the real world we think of anything god-like as having infinite powers well beyond our own, yet in D&D we try to quantify them so they can be killed, and personify them and communicate with them as near-equals via clerical spells or traveling to their plane and paying them a visit at their palaces. Truthfully a DM can never really properly roleplay a God because they're supposed to be far beyond us in nearly all facaulties so the concept of divinity in D&D is already kinda flawed, its just another level of raw power.

About killing a god and assuming its domains...

Something like the Time of Troubles comes to mind...

And how many mortals were actually Mystra?

Just one question, how do they gain hero status?

there are no set mechanics for becomming a god. Anyone can do it within reason.

There are examples, such as doing something fantastic like mastering every spell school ever created or by overcomming nearly impossible odds such as surviving after injesting every poison ever created... or just killing an existing god and taking over his/her/it's power.

yea, a low level character can become a god, buy gaining levels.

but seriously, a level 100 sorcerer could probably kill anything at a whim, create anything, and would be immortal

You go by the assumption that the worship of people will make you more powerful, which is true into only one campaign setting (Forgotten Realms) and we don t know into which one did he play.

For what its worth, there was this underground fantasy-based comic back a few years ago called "Replacement Gods", where the heir-apparant to the deific throne of war was nothing but a in-jail, outta jail thief who can't really exceed at anything other than not die (I would stat this out as a low level rogue).

But then again with the worship of people making you more powerful they kinda toss that out with the Silence of Lloth and her gaining Greater status...
