The D&D Miniatures game can be played as is, using warbands that you assemble in skirmish play against a friend or in tournaments. They are also good for "livening" up the role-playing game as they add a tangible "thing to do" other than roll dice. They are great in this aspect because they clearly show how things play out on the battlefield. Something I would suggest for someone just getting into the game is first, get a copy of the PHB for yourself, and second, make sure you read through it and try to understand the rules. The miniatures game is a good way to learn the combat system. Although it is slightly different than the role-playing combat system, it is simple to translate. Hope this helps

At the risk of starting a heated debate, I daresay D&D (in its current edition) is unplayable without minis. Half of the feats, and the class features of many classes/prestige classes, become meaningless/useless if a battle grid and minis (or some representation of the various combatants) are not used. You will also save alot of time that might otherwise be spent arguing over a character's position, etc.

I recommend to anyone who will listen that you go to Office Depot (or any other office supply store, probably) and buy an easel pad with 1" grid. They are large enough to accomodate most combats, and each pad comes with 50 sheets. We draw the battlefield using markers or whatever, and mark hp lost, special conditions, etc. next to the appropriate mini (makes it easy to keep track of how many hp each monster /NPC has left). When the combat is over, tear the sheet off and toss it in the trash (or save the sheet if other combats will take place in the same area).

As a DM, I wont run a game without them. In fact, any time the party is in a situation that may have conflict, I set it up. Because we do this so often, it takes little time.

If you like them, definately get the DnD Minis. For the price they are the best on the market. And lots of folks just collect them because they are cool.

I have over 1100 of the D&D minis and I use them only for the RPG.

I have a ton of Mage Knight minis as I used to play a lot. They don't make them anymore so you could probably get a lot of them for really cheap. It's somewhat limited for some things (No halflings or Gnomes, Larger creatures are on the same size bases as everything else) and you have to buy a matt that is 1.5 inch squares, but otherwise, there's a really good scelction and it's really not that expensive.

I love minis. They are my guilty pleasure (besides RPGs and . . . uh, nevermind). I like to get them out of the giant tacklebox and place them all out on the dining room table. Then I have little battles, and talk to myself in funny voices . . .

Last night I had a mage summon a celestial dire badger. I happen to have both the mini and the card for it. So I placed the mini on the "board" and gave the player the card to use for making attacks with it. D&D minis work great, another DM didn't realize that the cards had stats that could be used in a regular D&D game, "Now I have to find out where I put all of those."
