Every four levels add one to the ability score of your choice. Change the modifier as necessary.

So ability scores only lvl up by one at 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th?

You got it.

Clarification: ONE ability score is increased by ONE point at every character level divisible by 4.

(In case the consistent use of the plural "ability scores" by the OP implioed that s/he thinks all ability scores increase every four levels.)

Mostly Ability scores get increased by Prc Class bonuses or Items as you advance levels, look in the DMG to see examples of this, The Dragon Disciple Prestige Class and The Gauntlets of Ogre Power in the Wondrous Items sections are good examples.

We're not cutting and pasting from the books, pal. A "generic"/"in our own words" answer is permissable, if I'm not mistaken.

If it allows someone to play the game without buying the book, it's not permissable.

Azezel are you saying that telling WaffleCop that you add one ability point to an ability of your choice every 4 levels is against the rules? Or are you saying listing the names of various prestige classes is against the rules?

It's a moot point, because it is in the SRD. Just not where you would expect it to be. To find the rule, you have to look in the "advancing monsters" section.
