| Sarella Starshine06-30-07, 03:35 PM | you *can* like you *can* play from the SRD, but it will be really hard, because all the neccessary info about xp, leveling, etc. are in the DMG and not in the SRD. |

Leveling info is in the PH. And some places can calculate the xp reward. The only thing unavailable online is the wealth by level table. Honestly, I find the dmg to be the least useful book. |

And it might actually be easier to draw creativity from the SRD, where you can't be distracted by all the pretty pictures and such. Not that I'm distracted by any of that, to the point of taking 5 hours to write one encounter...*cough* So yes. You can DM from the SRD. |
| CCS06-30-07, 04:46 PM | As has been mentioned, the most important part of the DMG is the XP tables. Next would be the treasure tables/descriptions. But, though as important as those two things are, you don't even need those. I've seen, played, & DMd games where not only didn't we open the book, we didn't even pull it off the shelf! Granted, those games also had modified advancement mechanics as far as gaing levels were concerned and the players invold could recite nearly any magic items text.... So yeah, I guess you could DM straight off the SRD. |
| FaithlessOfLux06-30-07, 05:57 PM | I started dming from the srd. THe question you're asking is can I play dnd without sourcebooks? You can. But the advice in the dmg and dmg 2 is VERY helpful and you should play games and ask a lot of questions online before trying. The answer is you can DM a game, but can you DM a successful game is a different story, |
